Thinking of it as a "battle" seems to be the problem here. It's not "good vs. evil", it's your innate character vs. your denial. I hope that if you embrace your true desires you won't think of it as "I'm gay; I lost." To accept yourself is only the beginning, but the journey can't begin unless you let go.

 

By the time somebody becomes aware later in life the war is over.

 

Try having a polifidelity, in other words: a relationship of three people where you are are partner to each other. Search the word policidelity at google and wikipedia.
