I thought the Governator vetoed this - seems like his judges went against him.

    Great news anyway.

Woohoo! My state just legalized gay/lesbian marriage! domestic patnerships have been around for a while, but just a little bit ago the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage in California. I am SO HAPPY that steps are being taken to make us all acceptable in society.
Oh, and Ellen Degeneres (lesbian talk-show host) is getting married at the end of the month. :eusa_clap Yay for her!
I'm just so proud. *wipes away happy tear*
 Yay for the Supreme Court!

Apparently the battle isn't over. People are signing petitions to see if there can be an amendment to the constitution to ban gay marriage completely--and that'll overrule the Supreme Court decision. Man, that sucks. But apparently people are having trouble getting enough supporters, when there's people like me :icon_wink who are openly in favor of gay rights (though not openly homosexual).
Be a supporter of the movement! We need to make sure the homophobes don't win their case...

I'm so happy! Massachusetts and now California, now if only the rest of the states would join in. I think I'm gonna move to California.

    Move to Canada, people.

First off, it's important that small government (local and state) can create laws and have specific laws for its people. Not every law is right for each state. It's a big country.
The problem here is, the people spoke in 2000 and over 60% said marriage is between a man and a woman. Activist judges who go against the will of the people have no place in our society. The goal should be to change the minds of the people.

Interestingly enough, California (since then), has really come through with legislation to give gay people drastically more rights, especially concerning domestic partnerships. And the citizens have not caused a fuss. The question is why are people okay with giving equal legal rights but not the historical "institution of marriage"...

I think that when it comes down to it, the institution (and word) marriage really carries religious connotations for most people. And since we're always so concerned with the separation of church and state, we've put ourselves on the other side of the fence on this one. Yes, not everyone who gets married is religious...but most are to some extent. How can we ask "the other side" to respect us, if we don't show them respect in return?

I think a happy medium is required. California was on the right track with domestic partnership rights. "Taking" marriage by force, as this does, will only do harm to the gay movement. There are rights that need to be fought for, and some we already have.
We throw the term discrimination around even when it isn't so. The constitution has nothing in it that would require the courts to rewrite the lawbooks and disregard the vote of the people.

Even though it shouldn't be in the legal wording, people have the right to use the words "husband", "wife" and "marriage" as they see fit. It just worries me that in our attempt to gain rights we're experiencing straight envy, and are abandoning our uniqueness for sameness. It sounds like the black and white world in The Giver.

As long as we have the same rights to monogamous marital partnerships (as it seems California already had achieved), would it really do us harm if we end up getting a different brand of the same product?
