As a female I am unusually and extremely visual. Porn and erotic novels hold equal amounts of sway to my loins. hah. Hell, I got turned on just watching an attractive girl stock shelves at a grocery store. <_< and I also have to visualize while getting intimate. It might be a little strange but...yeah

I pretty much concur with everything else that has been said. Especially the fake as sin, "lesbian" porn. It's just depressing. XD

I used to be turned on by everything.
Now everything just seems dull and boring. (-_-)zZ

Ah, Lewis, I'm so sorry you had to read 50 Shades. Don't get me started...

OK--just this: Do you know that woman held four of the top ten places on the NYT best seller list? One for each book in the trilogy and one for the anthology of all three. Argh! :tantrum:

    [Putting soapbox away.]

Anyway, I've heard the generalizations, too, and I can tell you that I have always been turned on by porn. I wonder if women in general (maybe especially straight women) are embarrassed to either try it or admit they like it if they do.

I also love erotic stories, but I'm a reader in general.

I wonder if people who are single get turned on, on a more regular basis, than someone in a steady relationship who has Sex on tap?

I would say yes. I mean, my boyfriend and I haven't had sex but I still feel guilty watching or reading anything erotic and getting turned on.

Maybe it's different for guys though. Who knows? Certainly not me.

Visual erotica and real-life sexual sights do nothing for my arousal, even though I enjoy erotic images at a different level. My male partner is extremely visual. So, I suppose we fit the statistical norm.

When writing erotica, I'm often asked to describe what my characters look like and to include more visual information. I don't care all that much and don't have a detailed image in mind when I write. It's primarily the dialogue that arouses me.

Interestingly, the men are more likely to want very specific visual details about the characters, while many women prefer to imagine the characters in their mind with their own preferences. Because none of it matters to me for arousal (although I have aesthetic preferences), I tend to include relatively random details tailored to the specific audience.

What would you say the greatest challenge writing believable male characters would be?

Details certainly help to flesh out a character, but that has less to do with arousal and more to do with maintaining interest in the story itself. Though, too many details and I feel limited in using my imagination, losing interest.

One thing I've noticed of books written by women for women, especially romance novels, is how long the stories seem dragged out. It's like one character can't even say a word without setting off a five paragraph internal dialogue from another. There's also a lack of detail when involving male-male sexual depictions, and I'm not sure if that's due to focus being on other areas of a relationship, ignorance, or discomfort?

It depends on the content. Everyone has kinks. For me it just depends on whether those kinks are more present in the visual content or reading material.
I get turned on by voices, accents to be exact. Hearing my crush speaking Spanish drives me crazy.

A guy with a really deep voice who doesn't actually look like you'd expect him to have a deep voice. Basically a guy who is on the thin and lanky side who nevertheless has a voice that vibrates your bones

Almost anything can get me going, but isn't as quite easy as it used to be.

Guess I'm just not a horny teenager anymore.

Well being the teenager that I am, pretty much anything remotely sexual turns me on.

I'm going to say it's both, because when we read something we're interested in, our brains tend to visualize it. But I'm the same way, a well written piece of erotica will turn me on more than the best porn, although porn still does it for me. Sadly I can't find much good erotica T.T

I think anyone can be turned on by anything regardless of gender.

Hmm, well I'm a trans dude but still having all female hormones I suppose that means words and things should work for me
No chance! If I read erotica or whatever I just get bored.. For me its porn, sometimes pictures or watching a girl doing something hot :')
But I think that's because I need more aggressive things to turn me on, romance or 'making love' doesn't work at all. So porn ussally covers my need to see rough sex..where as reading doesnt
I do see the point of this though like all the lads, well my mates all admit then need strong visual things to get off to or watching a girl strip or something where as my girlfriend hates porn, but i only have to wisper her ear and she's mine :')
