Why are furries, y'know, furries?

Well, here's the thing. I'm not quite at the point to give just anyone the entire story just yet, as I'm worried it might get leaked in some way or another and get ripped off, making it impossible for me specifically to make money off of it when it's finished. I only give vague plot points here and there to people to give them a bit of an idea of what my book is like.

Also, no matter what, there's always going to be someone who as a problem with anything. With my book, it might be that they don't like that there's an implied rape in one part, or that I handle the touchy subject of political correctness the way I do. I'm not saying I'm trying to remove the fact of haters from the equation completely, that's impossible to do. I'm just wanting to at least minimize the amount of them so that I can reach a bit of a wider audience with my book and get the underlying messages of the story out to as many people as possible. I've been told that my book so far is really something special, and I want it to overshadow those bad furry comics of the past and make people forget about them, making a bit of a healthier image for the community, as well as giving it a good story that anyone can like.

It sounds to me like your story will be just fine. I've read enough furry books that have implied (or explicit) rape scenes, and they generally don't get too much flak (at least from the furry community; there are other people out there who believe any book that even mentions rape should be banned). It's a part of life and a part of literature. There are plenty of books out there that are written completely about rape; Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is one that I know of right off the bat that caused some commotion in my high school a few years back (a parent objected to the freshmen reading it for English class). I personally see no problem with implying that it happened, provided you're not glorifying it or anything like that.

Of course, I would never glorify any sexual content in my books. Like I said before, both times I imply sexual interaction between characters have consequences. The first time, the character who is raped almost loses their friends and the one they love due to a misunderstanding about what happened, and the second time, the girl in the relationship gets pregnant while also becoming addicted to a powerful drug, most definitely causing harm to her unborn child. It's all about showing what can really happen in life, and sort of giving advice on how to get through those situations, because a lot of people have gone through such things as being raped or being stuck in the closet because of having a homophobic best friend or family member without knowing how to handle them. My story is a good way of subliminally giving advice to those types of people. I use those plots lines in my book as examples when I give advice to people here on EC, and it really seems to help them.

subliminally is one of my least favorite words X3

From the way you're describing things though I would file one complaint *Gets necessary paperwork* your description comes off as extremely sex negative. Kinda like all those abstinence programs at school that are constantly hammering in that sex = bad, without acknowledging really that sex isn't inherently bad or good, it's about how responsible the people engaging are.

Look, I just don't want my book to become another fetish comic like Incontinent Student Bodies or Concession or the like. I'm trying to distance my story as far as I can from becoming like those. I want it to be on the same level as 'Maus' and 'Ozy and Millie'. I guess it's mainly that I have an utter disgust for furry pornography which stems from my first encounters with the internet when I was younger, but my story isn't supposed to revolve around sex, like Concession did, which gave it a bad reputation. It's supposed to revolve around the characters' troubles and getting beyond them. It's the story's morals that drive the plot, not porn. I understand if you or anyone else were hoping it to have "entertainment value" via pornography as an incentive to read it, but that's not what I'm wanting in my story. I want it to be clean from that.

That's not what I was saying at all.

I don't care if you choose to avoid sex or not. I was just pointing out that you take a very negative stance on sex according to your description. That doesn't mean "Moar sex" I was just saying be careful not to turn your story into a campaign against sex, or something that shames people because they have sex. Does that make sense?

Ah, alright. I completely understand. In that sense, it's really that I'm just so tired of finding yet another furry comic that has sex in it without the most common consequences of having it, like in the sense that rape goes unpunished and sex never ends up in a pregnancy. It's just not well thought out when it comes to that. It's just sex and nothing else. It seems to me that it would still be a fresh idea to have the sex have consequences to it in a furry comic. Sex is not always a do-it-and-done deal; There's always the possibility that something goes wrong whether it's during or after the fact. Wouldn't it be more interesting of a story to have the girl get pregnant and have to suffer for her irresponsibility instead of just having sex for sex's sake and not following up on it? The moral of what I'm going for that idea is that the character learns that actions have consequences, no matter what the action is. I'm just really frustrated that it has never been brought up before in this kind of story, at least to my knowledge (which is limited to the furry comics featured on the Bad Webcomics Wiki and Encyclopedia Dramatica, TBH).

Pregnancy is a major plot point in the webcomic "TwoKinds" which is a furry comic written by Markiplier's brother.

I get where you're coming from, and I agree. That side of things does need to be discussed and brought upt, buuuut I just like when things have a balance to them. Something that says "Hey this has consequences and you shouldn't just take it lighty, but it's not outright bad"

Also the furry comics involving rape are usually just an expression of sexual fantasies people have. I've not seen a non-sex comic from furries that glorify it or take consequences from it.

I never would've known that about TwoKinds before, as I barely read both the BWW and ED articles about them, I found the "Project2nd" scandal to be a much more ridiculous and hilarious topic to read about, as well as something to laugh at the art of, as literally anyone could probably do better. If TwoKinds were a little less along the lines of blatant racist overtones and such, I probably would've paid more attention to the articles (or maybe they didn't have the information on that plot point at the time, it was a long time ago that I read about it, I really can't remember well enough to know).

Also, I don't really know how justifying explicit rape scenes in furry comics (or any comic, for that matter) would make it any better. It's rape, it's not a good sign that some people are attracted to such a thing. The only reason I have it in my book is to make for an interesting plot line, which goes as such:

One of the male characters gets raped (I guess I forgot before to mention that it's a guy that gets raped) by the female antagonist of the book, who then spreads a lie around the college campus that he actually raped her. It doesn't help that the girl is the sister of one of the main characters, who believes her lie and so does the rest of the main group, all except the guy's closest friend, and he gets thrown out of the circle of friends, as well as losing the one he loves. The best friend then finds the guy later in a very distraught state and tries to help advocate his side of the story, and since the best friend is the most trustworthy of the group, they believe him, and let the guy back into the group, as well as getting his girlfriend back, and the female antagonist gets her just desserts so to speak. (I won't say how that happens, though, I'm wanting to keep that a secret for now :icon_wink)

In this sense, the main idea of consequence is brought upon the rapist of the story, not the victim. I decided I wanted to give it a little twist as well by making it about a guy that gets raped instead of a girl, as people don't normally think of that as a possibility. My own sister doesn't believe that men can be and have been raped, but then again she thinks I'm sexist for thinking that makeup is an outdated and demeaning form of beauty (people can be beautiful without the help of face paint, sis, get over it), so she's not really one to get opinions on things from.

Rape is a very prominent sexual fantasy. Though weirdly enough I think it's more common to fantasize about being raped than fantasizing about committing rape. Dunno what that says about people, but it's a thing. There is a difference between a fantasy and reality. Just having a particular fantasy doesn't speak anything to what you will/won't do in real life. A million people have fantasized about beating the crap outta their boss or a co-worker, but how many people actually act on that fantasy?

Honestly, I really love that plotline idea. I had toyed around once with the idea of pursuing something like that for a story, but I figured it'd be a really controversial subject matter and you'd find yourself being labeled a sexist rape apologist for daring to suggest that women are capable of rape so I left it alone.

Though I have to admit my story ideas revolving around that idea never took a positive route at the end. I took a more realistic approach. Women will always be believed over men in cases of rape, and if a woman were to rape a man and claim that he raped her, she'd be believed every time without fail, and the guy would be sent to prison to get raped even more. That's just how the reality of the situation.

I'm curious to see how your story resolves itself though. I'm interested in reading it.

Where do you get "blantant racist" from TwoKinds? =/

I think it clearly focuses on race given the storyline that follows, buuuut I'm pretty sure the moral is about racism being bad given the hero falls in love with a furry girl and their child together is supposed to do a thing ( It's been awhile since I last read it ). Also the comic has an arguably Female to male trans character in it. I'd consider the comic progressive.

It always makes me happy when people let me know that they like my work. :icon_bigg

If there's one thing I do remember about reading the articles on TwoKinds, the racism in the story is shown like this:

*The humans are usually shown to be white people who govern the land and don't take kindly to the other races of the story, and appear to be the dominant race.

*The rat-like race is a thinly-veiled metaphor for Asians, who are usually looked down upon by the humans yet have to follow their every command to a T, and live upon a code of honor.

*The furry race is also a thinly-veiled metaphor for black people, as they're seen as stereotypically uncivilized and stupid, in the wild seen as wearing loincloths and chucking spears at animals, not having the capabilities to create an advanced civilization on their own.

If you don't agree with my points, then that's okay. These are just the points I do remember being given to me by the articles on BWW and ED.

Speaking of the Bad Webcomics Wiki, BTW, One of my biggest inspirations to make a comic of my own came in the form of one of their tutorial articles that spoke about how to make a good furry comic. Here's the link, I think it's good not just for making comics but also any furry art in general:

That feels an awful lot like grasping at straws to me. In fact it's very grasping at straws, whoever wrote that is someone who was just looking to be offended.

    Interesting read.

And you're allowed your opinion on that. In retrospect, I actually couldn't care less about TwoKinds. It's just not my kind of story, nor was it anything inspiring for me. I am also thinking I shouldn't be really talking so highly of the BWW since I've actually interacted with its owner via their ED account in the past and they really aren't the kind of person to waste precious brain cells on. If you read what he thought of my writing, you'd seriously laugh. They wouldn't know what a good story was if it broke their arm. Hindsight is kind of a bitch.

I found the tutorial article insightful myself, and based my entire philosophy on creating my story on those seven golden rules. I guess you could say it was my first foray into becoming who I am today, an advocate for the furry community, since it inspired me to dedicate my life to making this story idea of mine happen a year ago this month. I consider it a little golden nugget I found during the time I was wading my way through the shit that was my experience with Encyclopedia Dramatica and the Bad Webcomics Wiki. :icon_wink

People read TwoKinds for the story? I thought was just because the characters were cute.

These are personal stories I find most fascinating actually. I can't wrap my head around it obviously, but I've always figured non-furs had a sort of "uncanny valley" reaction to it. Now granted, I think most suits look bad too, but the really good form-fitting ones with intricate craftsmanship... those are awesome. To me anyway.

I personally admit the craftsmanship of the costumes can really be quite impeccable, it's just that some of the design aspects are kind of "off" to me, like the large hands (or "paws" if you want to be that kind of person) and feet, and the scary, bug-eyed faces, which is the same reason I hate My Little Pony's character designs as well, for the most part, but that's a whole other can of worms. I really do like the creativity of some of the costume designs, as it appeals to my artistic side, it's just that it can really be overdone, like with, what was it again, "sparkledogs"? I'm in no way saying all fursuits look like those, but still, blue tongues, rainbow fur, wings, two-colored eyes? I've seen those on a lot of fursuit designs, and it just repulses me how much it makes them so generic, as it's the same thing that a lot of other people are doing with their fursuit designs, and it all blends together, making the more average fursuits seem more creative in comparison.

Began as a catalog of eccentric and bizarre individuals, from all walks of life, and wound up becoming the very thing it cataloged. Nowadays, I take it with a grain of salt, and really only as a jumping point to other sources.

One thing I can say is, the furry community has a tough journey. It is unfortunate that many of the more profound folks documented on ED, just so happen to be furries, or have some connection to them.

Yeah, back when I was still in my "furries are awful" phase (mostly because of the content featured on ED) I made the mistake of thinking that the dated information there (they really suck at updating the information on their articles) still held credibility about the site's opinion on furries as a whole. It turns out that nowadays the site is almost completely run by them, and the kind of them that you'd expect from their content on furries. I once was solicited a really gross form of sex that I won't describe here from one of the overage furries there, which of course I didn't accept, mostly because it was illegal, partially because I was still afraid of any and all furries. I felt alone in my crusade against them, as everyone else was still focusing on the influx of SJW scandals and GamerGate. I only lasted a few months there, and they were the most miserable months of my life.

UPDATE: I have finally given in and uploaded a couple of my character drawings to a brand new photo album of mine for everyone to see. I will hopefully be able to update it regularly to show you all the extent of my entire year of dedication to this graphic novel idea of mine. :icon_bigg
