I've always thought you were a theist, actually, because I spelled your username as "Gay-theist". :icon_redf
Let's just say I believe religion is nothing short of a mental disorder, only justified for and by the shear amount of people who practice it. PS. Atheism is not a religion.
I just saw this as I was rereading the thread. That is quite funny. Is it even possible to be Jewish and not be circumcised? What's the convention for converts? I knew someone from a foreign country who got circumcised in his late teens because of health reasons and/or appearance and he said the patient cannot get an erection for a while. I couldn't fathom that even being possible for an 18 or 19 year old young male My answer: I was raised in the religion claimed by 1 in 5 Americans. Yes, that one! I believe most of it. There are some dogmatic positions I don't believe in that would automatically toss me over to being a Protestant. However, I do not practice because I haven't liked what I've seen ... and I've seen a LOT. Another religion or agnosticism/atheism are not options.
I was raised as a Mormon but I haven't gone to church for over 15 years now. These days I still believe in God but not in necessarily any organised religion sort of way.
My family's half Christian half Jewish, though I was raised to follow more Jewish traditions. Personally I don't place much stock in religious traditions or beliefs, but the subject of religion itself fascinates me endlessly, and I really do mean that. It's hugely imaginative, and I think that the imagination always surpasses reality. It's no wonder religion captivates people and creates fanatics. Fanaticism is a truly human response to a philosophy that transcends reality, since reality fails to live up to our own wildly unrealistic expectations.
Fun how things change in a year. I'm a Secular Humanist now. I also believe in Coffee, as Aussie said.
Amoramist, something that I've made up when I was 15. Currently working on a book about it so that people could understand a little more and not think that it's just some kind of fantasy crap.
Raised Anglican (although I also went to a Catholic school) but now I'm an atheist. I do have a tremendous interest in Buddhism though...may pursue that.
