    Did the weather suddenly get very cold? Something like this happened in the Midwest last winter--occasional explosive banging that was heard over a wide area and scared the hell out of us. In our case, it turned out to be related to a sudden snap of very cold weather after some rain. The ground and the moisture froze so quickly that when the water turned to ice and expanded, causing the frozen ground to crack deep down and make loud banging sounds. The common term is "frost quake".

    In Michigan we have this all the time. Buts it's just normally locals competing to see who can get the loudest sound and not getting caught(it normally calls for uncanny amounts of homemade explosives, gun, and booze.)
