    "Okay, we're going to take some precautions tonight," I say. I pull out a huge canister of salt and start salting the doorways and windows of the motel room. "You're going to stay inside." I also dig through my backpack and hand Rowan a dagger. "Use this."

    I blink awake as sunlight pours through one of the windows. Running through my hand through my hair, I notice Rowan sitting in one of the chairs, tapping away on their phone. "Good morning"

    "I get nightmares a lot. Occupational hazard. Mostly of the people I couldn't save," I sigh. I walk over to where my backpack is on the ground and rummage through it, grabbing a tshirt and jeans. "I'm going to shower. Do not leave the room. And definitely don't look out the window, in case someone's out there."

    I wait until she's in the shower, then peek outside the room quickly. No one's there. I breathe a sigh of relief and look back down at my phone.

    I quickly shower and pull on my clean clothes. I need to go to one of those coin operated washing machine places to wash my clothes. I'm running out of clean articles. I gather my hair into a ponytail and walk out. Rowan is still on their phone. "Ready to go?"

    "Sounds good. Don't want anyone to know we were here." I walk over to the closet in the motel and find a mini vacuum cleaner. "Perfect." I start vacuuming the salt up from the doorways and windows.

    I tense the second the vacuum cleaner sucks up the first salt granule, expecting someone to come barging in and attacking us, but no one does.

    After finishing vacuuming the salt, I grab a grab a ziplock bag from my backpack and pour the salt into that. From the bag, I transfer the salt back into the canister. I return the vacuum back into the closet. "Let's go. Austin is eight hours out."
