How old were you when you got your drivers license? I know so many people my age that don’t know how to drive, and I find it interesting.

It is interesting! Two of my (now adult) kids don't have their licenses and my other two got them in their 20s. My brother got his in his mid 30's and one of my sisters never got hers. When I was at school it was the norm to get your license the first business day after your birthday - i.e. as soon as possible!

    I still don’t have mine. I’m 26 and I only have a learner’s permit.

I couldn't wait so asap for me, 16. That's what we all did back then to get out of the crummy town lol. I didn't understand being gay yet, but maybe I knew I needed the option to get away and had to do it on my own. I also wanted to be liked and probably hoped buying a car would help lol

16, but almost 17 I got my beginners. I think I was 20? 21? when I got my standalone license.

It made me so anxious, but public transportation is impractical here, so I finally had to lol

That's more recently. Everyone I knew growing up wanted it as soon as possible. If someone can explain to me why some people are putting it off, I'd like to know. How do people who put it off get around? By bumming off rides from their parents and friends?

16! On my 16th birthday! I was psyched up for it. Not that it matters, I got perfect scores on the written and drive tests. I prepared for a long time.

They told us in my driver's ed class that "driving is a privilege." I really believe that. I'm almost sure the ability to drive and get away or get out has been helpful for my mental health. I enjoy driving.

Hello All.....I got mine at 16. My mother didn't think I could get it, but took me in anyway. When I got it and then drove home she was hysterical most of the way! :old_big_grin: She should have known I'd get it as I'd been driving the tractor and the old cattle truck on our farm since I was really young. I started driving the tractor when I was 8 years old because I was too small to buck the hay bales onto the flat-bed trailer. I had to stand up to drive so I could reach the gas & clutch pedals. When I got big enough to buck bales, my mother drove the tractor!

That's awesome, of course a farm kid knows how to drive! I'm surprised you hadn't driven with your mother for practice and to the test. Good times!

Soon as I was 16, only test I actually studied for in High school.

I think people who grow up in big cites with decent public transportation are less likely to get a license than all of us small town people.

I got mine at 16. One of my friends who is in his later 30s didn't get his until he was about 26, and then, only because his work required it. Another friend who is 30 didn't get his license until he was 21. And someone I know who recently turned 30 has had 5 learners permits (they keep expiring) and still hasn't gotten his license, even though he lives out in the boonies.

It seems that many folks under 25 are finding it less of a priority. I think that's especially true for people in urban areas.

I'm in my 30's and haven't got my drivers licence. Mainly because it's expensive here. Also I had an accident with my dad's car 3 times. Once I almost drove it into a tree, second time another car hit us and 3rd time my dad forgot to put the breaks on, so when I turned the car on the car hit the the stairs of our house. I screamed. So I have a trauma because of it all, but I do want to get my own at some point. It sucks not having a car, but luckily we do have decent public transportation. I can get by bus to everywhere and we have lots of grocery delivery options, so don't need car for that either. Taxy is relatively cheap too.

Still learning how to drive. I put it off to focus on my studies. Now that I'm back to living in a small town, I regret not learning sooner.

It's tricky, finding an instructor who is available. I will keep searching. Now that I finally have the time and I'm no longer in a bad state of mind, I can put more focus into driving.

Almost 24 now. I will have to see how many times it'll take to pass my test.

I was 18 (which is the legal age in my country to start driving) when I got mine. But I haven't driven a car for ages. I hate it and it scares me a lot (even though I have never had a car accident while I was driving).

I was almost 23. 18 is the legal age here and I couldn't care less about driving and I still do.

I got mine for a job offer that got canceled last minute, and I messed up somebody's parked porsche with my mum's car not long after. So I haven't driven since then.
So as I like to say "I have a drivers licence, but it doesn't mean I can drive".

I got my licence in Oct 2009 and I was 23.
I passed in Feb 2010 and it changed to a full UK licence.

Got my license at 17. Been driving for over 20 years now. It really is hard to believe it's been that long. Former coworker is, literally, a week younger than me and I'm not sure he has his license yet at almost 40. Some people wait, some never get it.
