I'll have to see if I can find the one they aired in Scotland one year. Most of it was bleeped out as I recall.

I know it's selfish and mean-spirited, but as an American I love to snicker at the state of politics across the pond. The European Parliament elections are my favorite - don't nobody in the European Parliament got a brain in their head!

Yes The Republicans are plain scary, they are a party of Protestant fundamentalists who love to invade every country possible. They are far worse than UKIP on every single metric possible.

Anyway fingers crossed that the Labour, I mean Benefits Party don't win.

Today I learnt that social welfare makes people poorer.

P.S. During Labour's time in government, social welfare spending fluctuated between 10 and 12% of GDP. It's in fact been in that range since the early 90's. I think where exactly it's being spent is most important, but that doesn't seem too high or too low to me. There was no huge increase in the size of the welfare state.
P.P.S., not everyone aspires to own their own home. My family don't and we're doing alright.

I don't get this obsession with social welfare. The amount of GDP that we spend on social welfare pales in comparison to Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and Denmark - yet the UK has lower social mobility and more people living in poverty than all of these countries (as % of population, of course).

Actually England is the worst off as far as social welfare goes thanks to the Barnett formula

So did all of you vote today yet? And what were your main issues? leaning toward more EU integration or less? I was torn today, with a very liberal view of gay rights of course but more conservative views on other matters.

I haven't voted yet, but I'm going to make my way to the polling station shortly - it's just up the road from me (closes at 10pm). I decided to vote for Labour. I was tempted to vote for Greens, but it was more of a 'heart says yes, head says no' kind of feeling, and I really dislike their stance regarding High Speed 2.

Yes I voted. I'm pro Europe and want closer integration, so this was uppermost in my mind when I voted earlier today. I'm very concerned that Europe will lurch to the right this weekend.

My original plan to vote for everyone that wasn't UKIP & the BNP was thwarted when I realised that the STV system is not used for the European elections, so I just voted for the SNP. It's supposedly a straight fight between them and UKIP for the 6th seat up here so I decided to help out the right party.
