    These are certainly rather creepy...

I think part of the problem is that clowns are outdated. When I was a kid we had circuses on TV over Christmas and clowns featured on TV from time to time so to us they were familiar. Now though they are rarely seen.

Do McDonalds still have the Ronald McDonald clown figure?

Many adults are afraid of clowns also. I think it has something to do with the fact that you can't see their emotions change. They are unpredictable.

I find them extremely frightening. The sight is almost unbarable. I avoid places where they might be.
I wasn't afraid of them until late Middle School, which I find kind of weird..never had a bad experience or anything, though.
And Ronald Mcdonald scares the heck out of me. I can't stand going into Mcdonald's when they have like, a statue of him. *shudder*

I'm not afraid of clowns, but I don't like them... I never have liked anything that dresses up (i.e. chucky cheeses (the rat thingy) etc) XD I used to be scared of the chucky cheeses rat

I've never been scared of people dressed as anything. I think this may be because my parents never tried to prevent me from viewing 'scary' images. For example, if my parents had forced me not to watch gruesome movies that they rent, I would have an idea that some hideous creatures exist. And, going further, I might think they must be incredibly hideous if I'm not allowed to see them. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think most parents aren't like mine in this respect.

My friend speculated exactly that, that circuses are quite outdated and that most people's exposure to clowns these days is in horror movies, not as objects of frothy entertainment.

I have to agree. I don't think I generally find them scary on the surface but thinking back on it, most of my exposure is in horror movies or TV with horror themes. It's interesting how predominant that's become.

Number three in the picture above is... well I was going to say scary, but I guess I follow the trend and say disturbing

The makeup and demeanor play a factor in a clown's scariness or my fear factor. No problems with Krusty the Clown, but Pennywise the Clown scares the living beejeezus out of me.

Furthermore, now that I have mentioned that, I believe I will no longer be able to visit this thread for the fear that one of you will post an image of Pennywise. Thank you Stephen King and thank you future poster for all of those sleepless nights.

Does anyone else think that 1 and 2 are much, much creepier than number 3?

I find them creepy but I dont get scared by just the sight of them. I agree that the newer generation have seen clowns as more of something to be feared rather than entertainment, with movies like IT and Poltergeist.

...and just for you, justjoshoh (actually I was going to post it anyway)
