Why are there so many more shows for gay dudes than lesbians?

So I just saw the announcement for an adaption of Red, White, and Royal Blue and while I’m always glad to see more lgbt stories being told it kinda is a bit annoying to me that every time I turn around whenever a new show is being made, particularly for younger adults and teens, it’s always about gay men. Yes, I know there are shows with queer women characters out there but they never seem to be greeted with the amount of fanfare that shows like Heartstopper or the Love Simon movie were, and in a lot of shows they’re the side characters rather than the main couple. It just feels like people only care about gay boys a lot. There was so little representation growing up for me of women that were gay that even though I *knew* lesbians existed I had zero frame of reference for what that looked like. All I ever was exposed to was stuff about gay guys and this is prob a big reason why I didn’t know I was queer sooner. Also, so many shows with gay women end up getting cancelled: Warrior Nun, First Kill, Everything Sucks, I Am Not Okay With This, etc. I don’t know, I just feel frustrated that queer girls always seem to get the short end of the stick. I wish this is something that would change.

I definitely agree. Gay white men basically dominate queer representation. Men in general probably get more representation?

My theory is it comes down to simple fetishization by straight women. They're drawn to M/M romance media in a way that they're just not for F/F which means M/M content automatically has a larger audience. Money talks, but the fascinating thing is that it isn't just capitalism/the Hollywood complex. Fanfiction, which by nature is content produced for free and can be literally anything you want it to be, is also dominated by M/M pairings.

I have definitely noticed this as well. What I find interesting though is there’s so much talk about how straight men fetishize lesbians, (especially in porn) but this desire to see women together in romantic relationships doesn’t seem to extend to movies and shows? I can only think that the reason why it isn’t as appealing as porn for them is because romantic relationships that are about more than just sex don’t satisfy the male gaze enough.

If I had to guess why some shows with w/w as main characters are getting cancelled, it would be that Hollywood, at least from my perspective, has gotten into this habit lately of trying to force diversity into their movies or shows. Rather than trying to fit in, the diversity for the shows or movies in a way that feels nature or organic sometimes. Then, Hollywood tries to blame it on the consumer if they don’t like the movies or shows for a valid reason. In my case, that’s caused me to think fine, I’m not giving certain movies or shows a chance because it tells me you don’t want to give me good shows or movies that just happens to include diversity. Otherwise, I have no problem with diversity like w/w as main characters being in the stuff I watch. Hope I explained all that well enough.

But that begs the question, why are these shows being automatically dismissed as being “not good”? What are the parameters of “good” since that’s so subjective? Some people liked these shows that were cancelled quite a bit! And for the people who didn’t like them, why do they think that disproportionately it is wlw shows that are unsatisfactory where there are far fewer complaints about shows with gay men?

These are questions I can't give you a clear answer to. But I won't deny that these shows did have people who enjoyed them.

Gay white men do seem to control the media channels.

There is also that. Women are also covertly watching M/M porn. They might wince at some parts of it, but like checking out the guys.

There are more G/B men than L/B women in the population, or it looks that way.

Reaching back, there were some landmark films in the '80s such as "Making Love" about men and "Desert Hearts" about women. But the films about men exceeded the films about women going forward ... films like "Birdcage," "Shelter," and "Mulligans." They covered young love, married guys coming to terms with their sexuality, and campy stuff. Look at how many TV shows that try too hard to be funny like "Will and Grace" and "Modern Family" have gay men or gay couples in them.

Lesbian erotica might be too soft core for some viewers. Society in general seems to be fascinated with gay men. If women do things that appear romantic and cuddly, that's okay because society thinks women are supposed to be that way. If women do things like excel in sports or become astronauts - things that men were known to do well - it's also okay because they've gone above and beyond to break barriers. If men show a sensitive side or do campy things, it's either seen as weak or funny, and people react to this more negatively, so it's controversial and controversy seems to sell better.

I know that if I'm invited to a mainstream "chick flick" - sorry - I won't go. These films move too slowly for my taste in cinema. These films have a more limited audience from the outset.

Good question. I had not thought about it. I can only opine that men seem to have more difficulty around their sexuality than do women. At least I notice more difficulty with the struggles of gay men. Other than that I have absolutely no idea!

I had meant to correct this: gay white men seem to have more control over the media channels that involve LGBT programming.
