I use mozilla firefox and also did a virus scan with nod32 and kaspersky(took 15hours  ). They did find a few and those are gone now. But they were no major viruses.
In my start menu, I have about 200 different programmes/folders. Maybe I have too many programmes installed on my computer.

200 programs! I bet you don't use like 180 of them at all. No wonder it took so long to run the virus scan!

Clearing out some of this lot wouldn't be a bad idea but I doubt it will make that much difference. It depends what the are though. It would certainly speed up your virus scans though, and get you more space on the hard disk.

If some of it is, shall we say, not completely legal, it may have been modified along the way and have extra nasties like spyware added. Some of the utilities (keygens etc) for getting unlicensed software to work also install little extras at the same time. In my experience PCs full of pirated software are usually in a much worse mess than PCs with a more modest amount of legal software.

It may be easier and better to wipe it and start again from the restore disks, and just install the stuff you actually use. That would wipe everything on the disk though so you would need to be organised with your backups to make sure you don't lose anything you need.

Ive started uninstalling a few but there are quite alot that I use.
and I cant really restore my computer at the moment as Im far away from home and I dont have the programme disks with me.

Also, I have used a few external devices where I had to do things with the drivers to make it work. Maybe they are also the cause of the problems Im having.

I use Windows Live Messenger and I love it.

There is a Windows Messenger Live that I HATE... it is on my computer and logs me in when I sign on but there is no way to open it on my computer... I've deleted all traces of it that I can find but it logs me on and logs out when I sign onto my messenger....

Sucks when people message me while I'm in a game and I don't see it for hours because I didn't realize I was logged in.
