Who Else DOESN'T Drink?

Discussion in 'Chit Chat' started by BoiGeorge, Apr 15, 2013.

  1. When people ask me this I say "no," because I don't drink in the way they are thinking of, although I will in reality I do technically drink. I will have a glass of wine every now and then, but I never drink to get drunk (I do it for taste). I've never been anywhere near tipsy even, and I have no desire to go there.

From the age of around 16-19 I was usually always drunk. Now I'm 20 and only drink very rarely, on special occasions and a few glasses of wine during Sunday lunch (but nowhere near enough to get me drunk).

    I don't drink. I don't like the taste and I don't need it.

    I drink.
I never drank until I was 21 though, which is the legal age for that here in the US. I'm definitely against under-age drinking, which is why I never did it.
However now that I'm 23 I do drink at least once a week. I drink in moderation, not like I'm looking to blackout or anything.
Sadly, it makes me feel better. It's a depressant but I enjoy the high it gives.. makes me more comfortable, and I can be myself. It's not like that for everyone.. some people get depressed or angry when they drink.. I get happy. I know my limits and I don't exceed them. I've done that once or twice before and regret it still.
I don't see anything wrong with drinking socially. Sure, sometimes I drink alone just because I want to. But if that's what makes me comfortable, I'm not going to not do it. If I start drinking every day or so, then I know it's a problem.
And yes, I can have a good time without drinking.. but it helps.

I can't stand the taste or smell due to my sensory hypersensitivities (part of autism). I'm the same way with coffee. Once, when I was having an asthma attack, my Dad forced me to drink a cup of coffee. I'd take one swallow, gag and need to wash my mouth out with some pop. Then I'd take the next swallow and repeat. I managed to get it down only because I was really scared by my asthma attack and figured it might help.

(And then I learnt that Coke has just as much caffeine as coffee does...)

Never tried before... well guess I'm still too young, legally.

My family and friends tried to get me to drink but I didn't want to try so they didn't really force me. Some of friends were surprised that I haven't drank before since a lot of them tried alcohol before.

Being english I've been a fairly heavy drinker at parties and clubs since I was about 15 and continue to do so. Its the norm for at least one or two people at the party or club to chunder after a night out.

Dad was/is an alcoholic. (A sometimes violent one.)

So, I've grown up never being interested in it.

Is there a large culture of underage drinking in America? In the Uk it's pretty normal to start getting drunk at 14/15 and maybe why Britain has a huge drinking problem

Depends on the state and/or area. The drinking age in the pitiful little Montana village I spent ten years of my life in may as well have been 12.

However, if my family had stayed in the Seattle area, for instance, I'm assuming most people that grew up there would find the idea of drunk twelve-year-olds downright shocking. Or do I assume too much?

I drink like twice a year and I got drunk only once, I guess. Also, most of my friends are the same

But it's not normal to drink with the family in childhood/early adolescence whereas it is in much of southern Europe, where there is less of a binge drinking culture there, where drinking is introduced as a civil and sociable thing to do (it's definitely not perceived as such on this forum, and perhaps in the UK).

That could be for many, many other different reasons though but it seems plausible.

I don't know about never, but as of now I don't, and don't plan to anytime soon.
