There's really no point. Assuming there is a human population on the mainland, it's not like I am saving the human species or anything. Instead, I am making a group of genetically inferior humans (as a result of the bottleneck effect) who live on a deserted island. If we were indeed the last humans on earth, I would have children to repopulate the earth. Genetic issues are worth survival of the species. It would take a while, but presumably the species would get back to genetic healthiness over a long time...

    I'm curious now...

How would these four individuals get to this island?

Plane crash? Marooned boat? Abduction and relocation? Nuclear holocaust forcing resettlement? Hole in the space-time continuum?

I know it isn't the point of the question, but the factors behind the situation might contribute to circumstantial exceptions, and so I bring this up.

No. There needs to be wild places without humans.

    I'm wondering the same...
Is this a videogame or something? Are we all in a videogame now?

You say on an island not on a planet or last survivors of earth. So why should I worry about breeding... with ladies. Poor man would be used a lot unfortunately. How can you pass time in a damn island with nothing to do?

Since you need a lot of humans to create a community without endogamy illness in few generations, I think that procreate from a group of 4 would be stupid.
If an entire community of gay and lesbian for some reason would be the only survives of human race, I think that they should choose what they want to do.
    Personally, I don't know.

Definitely no. If they were bi, maybe, but they won't have much child anyway, a single woman can't have 100 kids !!

Why does there need to be a human population on a desert island?

I've always seen sentience as a gift, a torch worth passing on. I also think it's our purpose to preserve the memory of this planet and all of the creatures that evolved here. I'd hate to see the thousands of years of hardships and accomplishments the human race has faced be rendered pointless by us dying off.

I know this is a philosophical inquiry that isn't meant for this thread but... anyway.

    ..

In principle, I'd have trouble with the idea of raising kids on an island without knowledge of the greater world, or vaccines, or antibiotics. Supposing the island were big enough to support everyone, or supposing the rest of humanity is dead or something... and supposing there were a lot more than four people--like several thousand people on an island who are all gay for some reason, then sure. In fact I'd probably mandate some sort of breeding quota to keep the species alive if that were the case. Otherwise, no.

Of course, if I were on the island with a guy and two girls, I'd like to spend a bit of time with everyone.

You guys are all forgetting that you would age and eventually harvesting/farming would become harder. With descendants on the island, you would have some people to work for your well-being.

Of course, I'm assuming that there's no way at all to leave the place.

On the other hand, I don't think I would live that much. Most of us would go crazy.

If there is no hope of rescue from other people, then we would rescue ourselves.

Firstly, 2 of us look for food while 2 of us start gathering resources to build some form of boat. Then once we had enough resources for the trip, start to head away from the island with 2 people rowing, so we can continously row without everyone being worn out at once.

We would be more than likely to see land eventually.
