Why are you cheering at another team getting eliminated when it wasn't even your own team that caused it? Surely it wouldn't make a difference whether Finland or Russia were eliminated in that match? :S

    1. A lot of US sports fans will conjure up reasons to root for teams of different countries. For myself, I see Finland as the team with a good chance of winning a gold that hasn't been talked about (all the analysis reads as Canada, Russia, Sweden, and maybe the US). If not the US then go Finland!
    2. Russian policies on queer people.

    1. Fair enough - you can obviously have a second favourite. But I'd rather it were 'go Finland!' than 'boo Russia!'
    2. As far as I know the Russian ice hockey team are apolitical and no-one should be viewing them in light of their country's government. The team are representing their country, yes, but it doesn't mean that any given Russian person has to be the 'face of homophobia' or whatever. I don't see any Europeans wishing ill on USA athletes because of the NSA's actions/the US government's treatment of Edward Snowden, for example.

I've been completely enthralled by the Olympics this year and I don't think the actual sport, which is what the Olympics is about, should be politicised. Yes, homophobia being institutionally prevalent in other countries bothers me but I don't think Russia's policies have actually interfered with the day-to-day running of the Olympics and so it's not really relevant.

I just spent the last hour screaming at my computer screen watching the GB vs. Sweden Curling. I think I've lost the plot.

Both of these. Plus, Teemu Selanne plays for Finland and he's been one of my favorite players since I was a little kid. I'm hoping he wins an Olympic medal (not gold--go USA!) and a Stanley Cup this year!

I only understand some of the rules and don't really know any of the tactics, but I've been doing the exact same thing whenever the curling is on. I really, really hope David Murdoch's Scottish team can bring home the gold.

I don't think I've ever been more conflicted watching a sports match then I was when I watched Finland v Russia at the hockey. On the one hand I dislike Russia's gay rights policy so that'd make me a sure fire Finland supporter right? Except Finland practices conscription which I also disagree with. So I spent the entire match hoping the referees would come up with some way to disqualify both teams.

I much prefer it when it's Team GB v Team that isn't GB. Annoyingly I'm at work during our glorious and inevitable demolition of Canada at curling, so I'm going to find a way to surreptitiously listen to the game while it's on.

A silver, bronze and four separate Olympics records in one sport though!
