I plan on posting a bit of a rant on Facebook tomorrow. It's not really meant for ECers, but more towards my well-meaning (but occasionally a bit shallow) friends.

Many people are planning on wearing purple tomorrow, in memory of the recent uptick in suicides related to bullying and sexuality. And wearing purple is a nice gesture. But unless people know what you're doing, and why, it's a completely empty one. If nobody knows why you've got a purple shirt on, you simply made a fashion choice. The ostensible point of this enterprise is for you and others to reflect on what has happened, and what continues to happen, and what we can do to help keep it from happening. Make sure you know, and make sure others know. And don't let it end when you take the purple clothes off. Keep your eyes open, keep your ears open, and keep your hearts open. If you haven't made a "It Gets Better" video, please consider doing so. If you know of a kid - gay, straight, or undeclared - who is experiencing a rough time, offer your support. Don't just put on the purple - make sure it means something. Thanks.

I don't have anything purple! But I'm gonna ask around my friends and see. Also gonna check into purple wristbands, bandanna's and maybe even socks. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I bought a purple T-shirt especially for the occasion. A work colleague suggested we all wear purple tomorrow. Group hug! (&&&)

I only got a purple water bottle lol. Think I'll carry it everywhere instead of putting it in my bag in school.

I just put this as my Facebook status: Tomorrow many people will be wearing purple in memory of the teens who recently committed suicide as a result of them being bullied because they were gay or perceived to be gay. There are too many kids dying because of bullying. Remember words do matter. If you know anyone struggling, please lend them a hand. Things may be tough now but life does get so, so much better!

I don't own a single possession that is purple in colour, I'm not even sure I have the courage to wear something purple if I did. I know it's pathetic and I'm sure many people will be upset with me. Hats off to those with the pride and courage to stand up and say we're not going to take it anymore. I promise I'm working on it, maybe next year.

Don't feel bad, being comfortable with your sexuality is different for everyone and it can be a long process. It's not pathetic at all. (*hug*)

So, either today is going to be very depressing, and even though the majority of hour school knows about people aren't going to wear purple. Or it's going to very uplifting if a lot of people wear purple.

    Hm..

This isn't a contest. If you're the only one wearing purple, you're the one saying "I care about this". And that's all that matters.

I see a lot of purple today and it makes my happy. All of my housemates are wearing purple in some way. Three of them put in purple hair paint stuff since they didn't have any purple clothes. I love them for their support.

I'm gonna be going around college asking people if I can write "RIP" on their arm with a purple permanent marker.
