Quotes like that are empty platitudes, designed to make people feel better about themselves.

 

You do realize, socialism is practically part of almost every government, even if it isn't referred to as such? Public roads and financial aid are two examples of this, at least in the United States.

Usually, anything funded by taxpayer dollars is socialist, because in a truly capitalistic society, the inmates of the prison would build their own facility and fund it, the children of the schools would build their own facility and fund it, the abused spouses of various centers would build their own facility and fund it, and so on.

 

That's socialism at work.

A fair tax sounds nice in theory, if you make a certain amount of money. Some folks can easily afford a certain percentage on merchandise, but others cannot. It shouldn't be about the tax, it should be about the income inequality that plagues this nation.

Tennessee doesn't have an income tax, but everything is so much higher to compensate -- and that is the problem. You eliminate all those other taxes, and leave only one, what do you think is going to happen? Suddenly, buying a week's worth of groceries is like renting an apartment.

The military and prison industrial complexes aren't going away, and they still require funds. You can shuffle all the taxes you want, but you'll still wind up paying too much in general. This isn't including everything else necessary to run a nation.

Personally, and this may be too radical, I wouldn't mind paying taxes if I decided where they went. In fact, that seems more democratic than anything we have now, since economic power is something capitalism preaches for all, but has a lackluster record of actually following through with.
