Like many countries, the US has many disgusting stains in it's history. This is one of them, and it's important that we call it what it is to discourage such archaic and barbaric thinking in the future.

Simple matter of learning from the mistakes of the past, and using that knowledge to build a brighter future.

I am outraged. We need to take to the streets to rectify this injustice.

Whether you take it seriously or not, it's still a live issue in itself and as a representation of race relations in the US.

The status in law and society of enslaved Boko Haram "wives" is a point in American foreign policy. The presence of sex slaves in ISIL territory and other forms of modern slavery which lead to the abuse, sexual and otherwise, of women show no sign of significantly abating and sex trafficking is poorly policed in parts of the world.

And when prominent Americans take exception to modern slavery and still whitewash their historical leaders' flaws, that perception of hypocrisy and the needless delegitimisation of American morality can make the job of helping people in modern slavery just a little bit harder.

It also opens up deeply resonant and old wounds for black Americans. The trivialisation of slavery and cases of unacceptably poor social and academic conditions for black Americans are things white America could do so much better simply to recognise and empathise with, something that bears no cost at a material level.
