LGBT News Mayor Jim Watson: After 40 years, I'm opening the closet door

    Through an op-ed article in the Ottawa Citizen, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson came out yesterday, on the eve of Capital Pride Week. Although there are and have been out municipal councillors, he is the first out gay mayor of Canada's capital.

    I’m proud of my track record on LGBTQ issues, from voting in favour of a motion on same-sex marriage to being the first Ottawa mayor to march in the Pride Parade during my first term.

    But if I can be so bold as to offer one bit of advice to those still in the closet: Don’t feel pressured or rushed to come out, but don’t wait 40 years either.​

    I am quite happy to see that he decided to come out. Another role model; the more there are in positions of power, or in institutions that can bring about positive change, the better.
