Lifeguards do have their points. But a better pool employee might a swim instructor. They are more likely to be shirtless on the job. (In my area, lifeguards wear a shirt on deck. And they don't generally get in the water that often.) Plus I like the fact that it's easier finding a swim instructor close to my age...although it's admittedly not easy.
