Re: sad sad sad day for LGBT in India

Why do people keep on highlighting its a British law, long before most Brits were born. We got rid of it in the 1950s India was welcome to do the same.

It was reinstated with Indian judges in 2013.

Re: sad sad sad day for LGBT in India

I know its lame to add a reference to the British, in this era. But the reality is during the Victorian era, the British ruling most of India found the liberal attitude towards sexuality in Indian societies to be disconcerting and hence brought a law that could put an end to it. And over the years "Kama Sutra" and other sexual identities became a disgrace rather than something to be proud of. And when British left (abruptly), the laws remained. These laws still exist because the majority of the Indian population is sedentary, uneducated and dont care enough to start a debate. But it is changing, although at snails pace...

The British might have scrapped their demonic laws in 1950's partly because of sexual revolution. But the same can't be expected from young and conservative countries like India with just 66 years of formation/Independence and with a billion plus people. The British have left an almost indelible mark in India. So we can never really say something without the colonial history......

I wonder if this would be considered an ex posto facto law, if they try to arrest anyone for having sexual relations between 2009 when it was decriminalized, and the time where it was recriminalized. This is awful. My thoughts go out to the LGBT community of India. Hopefully one day we'll ALL get equality.

That goes against the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, but I don't think many governments, let alone the Indian government, care about that.

This international law is a load of bullocks mate. It can't be enforced. To me it is a tool used by powerful countries to demonise weaker country for their own monetary purposes.

India - Where rape of women by men is at an uncontrollable rate and yet they go after homosexuals. Go figure.

With this and the recent negative ruling in Australia, an excellent year for LGBT rights ends a bit on a sour note.

A salubrious reminder NOT to be complacent; the struggle continues!

The western media is pretty good at reporting the so called "uncontrollable rate of rape" , when in fact due to widespread growth of local media and a more connected (internet) country than before, has shed light on rape that was never at uncontrollable rate. Rape has been there for a long time, it is just getting reported more often.

I'm not saying that its wrong for media to publicize rape often, in a way, i think it helps put more pressure on India to develop better laws and enforce. At the same time, it is not correct to generalize the rape scenario in a country with strong family values. A country with billion plus population with diverse economic background, there are all kinds of people.

Indiana wouldn't have been a problem.. at least there federal laws would have made this law a dead letter immediatly. India is a big problem : (
