As an Englishman who has never visited the US I'd be interested to know where you would all recommend (for living and settling) and why?

I like big towns and cities with a decent standard of living and local services, but I wouldn't want to be hundreds of miles/kilometeres from more open country and scenery. I like a place with vibrant culture and I value freedom, respect and tolerance.

    So, you tell me.

    Washington.

Why? For the reasons you stated.

Plus, tolerance. At least a better portion of it than you'll find in many many other U.S. states. (More so on the west side of the state, though. Not middle, not eastern so much.)

Fully agreed. Although I will qualify it as saying Seattle - I assume you would not consider Spokane big enough?

Anyhow, while Seattle itself is a beautiful city, if you drive just an hour out (or even less if you're in a suburb) you'll enter into expansive, beautiful, mountains and/or countryside. Further, the rain it gets makes it lushly green year-round.

My only concern would be whether or not you would hate constant drizzle and overcast days. Otherwise, Seattle seems perfect. Another possibility I can think of is Denver (Colorado) - I know less about it but I believe it's just a short drive to the mountains.

Spokane, while a city with very friendly people in general, tends "red" (conservative, in U.S. politics). And when WA state had its gay marriage referendum last year, I saw 10 yard signs against gay marriage for every 1 in support, in most areas there. :/

He's from England. I doubt it'll bother him overmuch.

Ehh...is Denver (itself) that tolerant? I know Colorado in general doesn't have that stellar of an accepting reputation. I think it trends more "red" than even Spokane & Spokane county, WA.

This all being said: You know, everywhere you go, there are going to be pockets of accepting & non-accepting people. There is a "gay community" in practically each & every town or city, in each & every state. Some are just 'quieter' than others, within their surrounding environment - possibly because of where they live & how accepting that area is in general.

But the fact is, we are who we are and unless and until we simply choose to be where we're going to be, and let other people get used to it (and us), these areas won't evolve any faster. That being said, being or feeling like the "gay pioneers" in any area isn't for everyone. And I totally understand that.

Actually - and I was as equally surprised as you to find this out - Denver itself (as opposed to Colorado in general) is actually extremely LGBT-friendly. And it's entirely "blue" (although I don't use that as a means of assessing tolerance anyways - liberal people can be intolerant), not even close to Spokane in that respect.

If you talk to some of the people around here from the Denver area, you'll be surprised what you hear. I know I was.

    Top 3:

    1. Kentucky: near Lexington, beautiful. The city of Lexington itself isn't too strict. I didn't go in, but I saw my first sex shop there.

    2. Houston, TX: I have family on both sides there.

    3. Seattle, WA: My former professor lives there and says it is beautiful. I love the pictures, and I hate really hot and really cold weather.

  10. Definitely New York, either Queens or Brooklyn since I've got family over there. I love the city life.

I would also live in Washington state. Very pleasant over there.

But I prefer to stay in SoCal, the Asian food is awesome. Believe me, it's the closest you'll get to authentic Asian food, including Pho and Peking Duck (no, not that PF Chang's shit).

I have no idea where to go to in the U.S since I've never been there. But I would most likely go to a state where it's not too hot.

I suppose I'd like to go to Portland but then again I'm basing it from the show Portlandia.

Los Angeles. I love the sunshine, the palm trees, etc. I would move there in a heartbeat. I go there every year to visit. I love visiting Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Malibu, Santa Monica, Hollywood etc. We went to see Grauman's Theatre, the Hollywood Walk off Fame, The Hollywood Hills, West Hollywood, Rodeo Drive, etc. Best vacation ever.
Las Vegas is fun. I love the lights, the action of the city, and the themed gambling resort and casinos. I stayed at Ceasars Palace last time I was there.
I have never been to New York City, but it looks like a place I would enjoy living. I love big cities. I love the fast pace of the city. The City that never sleeps
Portland, Oregon is my hometown. I love the liberal vegan hippie/ hipster /street punk vibe of the city. Keep Portland Weird!
South Beach Miami looks nice. Never been there though. The beaches look nice and welcoming.

If you like the show Portlandia, you would love Portland

Texas is cool, I agree, if you can stand the bipolar weather and the unbarable heat in the summer. But, I'll have to give it to you, you live in one of the best areas in Texas other than Denton.
