Hello! This is my first thread so please forgive me if this is in the wrong section. I am 16 and gay and I have been thinking of painting my nails. I've talked about it to a few friends and they have all been very supportive about it and want me to do it but, I have one problem. My parents are against homophobia but they beleive in gender roles. I am only put to my mum but I know that my dad would be cool with it. My mum hates it if I wear something that's slightly "feminine" and my dad thinks that guys who wear nail paint are just joking. What can I do? Thank you for reading.

You can tell them you have a nail biting problem and it would keep you from acting on it.

With a quick google search show them how ludicrous gender roles are

My boyfriend sometimes wears nail polish, so I put the question to him since I wouldn't be caught dead with nail polish (too much dysphoria for that haha--). He recommended maybe starting with clear nail polish, just to see if there is any reaction. You could then move to pale/not-very-noticable colors and finally whatever colors it is that you want to wear. He said his parents were reluctant but soon stopped caring, and they're fairly strict.

I really don't think it's anyone else's business how you choose to express yourself. Why should a penis dictate how you are seen in society? I think 16 is old enough for you to decide what you want to wear. If your mom makes a fuss, try telling her calmly that you wanted to try it/you like it and it's not doing any harm to anyone, it's just nail polish and if you decide you want to take it off all you need to do is use nail varnish remover. It's not like you're getting a permanent marking such as a tattoo.

Musicians, especially in metal bands do it all the time. Look at Ozzy Osbourne, maybe mention that to her? But, I really do like the idea above, about having a nail biting problem.

Yeah the nail biting problem is a good excuse. You should totally paint your nails!! It's ridiculous how nail polish is supposed to be a "girl" thing when guys look just as beautiful with it.

maybe try less "feminine" colours like black or green or navy blue?

I don't find black nail polish over the top feminine. Any other color might raise some eyebrows

I'm a dude and I ALWAYS wear black nail polish. A couple other dudes I know do too. Honestly, it's not that weird. Especially if it's just solid colors, though honestly if you're confidant enough about it no one will question you.

I know lots of guys who wear nail polish and no one ever says anything bad about it. I think it's becoming more accepted as a gender neutral thing.

If you babysit you could say the kids you babysit wanted to make you pretty and play with makeup. So they did your nails. I've seen a few boys at my school do that!

starting with black nail varnish might be a good way to ease them into it as it's generally more 'socially acceptable' for men to wear black nail varnish.
