What scares you about it? If It's pain, always use lube, or you can even just stay a top. If It's HIV, use condoms, and stay with someone you trust (doesn't have to be a boyfriend). You don't need to have anal either. Lots of other options out there.
Anal sex is full of horror stories. Bottom (hue) line: use lube, condoms + COMMUNICATION. Communication is key to an enjoyable experience. I think it's easier if it's with someone you are at least acquainted with.
