    This!

Far too complex for a child, especially if they're younger. I think there may be some very simplistic differences that can be conveyed. That final sentence is a powerful one thought

Simplest solution is to say: "You'll know and understand when you are older."

I would say this, all the while having a diagram to help me.

Hey son/daughter/other gender child, gender is very complex, so I'll just say that gender works in the brain, if you think and like being a boy even if you like wearing girl stuff, you inside might be like I'm a boy, so therefore you are a boy, the same applies to women.

I'd also explain how sometimes a girl might be born as a boy but because in their mind they really are girls, they are girls. Same applies to boys in girls bodies

Best not to tell a little girl that, because she'll probably try and make a mess

Probably biologically, then try and explain that there's also a feeling to it, that they think in different ways but it doesn't define what they can do or anything... and that some people have the wrong brains for their bodies and sort of try and explain how these people might need to transition, or do stuff to feel more comfortable. If they think that idea is really weird I'd have to convince them that its not. Its sorta crude but you have to say dumb stuff like "they have the wrong brains for their bodies" when talking to kids. If you say it with too many words, they can't compute. I just hope a kid never asks me, cos I sure never asked that. I guess a trans kid is more likely to ask... I used to just try and convince people that I was a boy. Somehow I already felt I knew what that meant.

Good thing there are men on here who can tell us less agile-minded beings these things.

In general, it's a correct generalization. Girls can also buy those "stand to pee" devices, but it doesn't mean that at age 8 they were able to pee neatly standing up.

I once did that to make a point...

Me: What do you think you are?
    Kid: A Dino!
Me: Sweet, plant or meat eater or both?
Kid: Both! That way I can become a strong T-Rex with dragon wings and so I can breath blue and green fire!
Me: Good job, go rawr at people to improve on that and eat spicy thing to work on that fire.

I was asked by their mom not to tell him to roar at people. X3

I know you were generalizing, but on a side note, I'm not kidding. XD I can pee perfectly fine standing up without a device... Am I weird? :icon_redf

Of course, many 8 year old boys aren't capable of peeing neatly when standing, either...
