You will make more of an impact if you turn off as much as possible. For example a standard incandescent uses 60W, and a CFL uses 15W. A laptop computer can use 60W, a desktop can use 100W, a CRT monitor can use 100W, and a television can use 160W. EDIT: Also, the burning of a candle releases more CO2 than using an equivalent electric light.
I completely forgot about it, because it was on tonight while the football was on. That said - Ireland played so badly it may actually have been better turning everything off.
But when you go to plug it back in it will have to recharge, and the act of charging and discharging a battery is less efficient than just directly using electricity. Plus you probably have a cable/DSL/phone modem and possibly a router plugged in, which also use energy.
How about you just sit in complete darkness for an hour? Go outside, watch the stars if you can see any from where you are! I was at a stupid party and missed it, but all the lights were off at home.
I left every one of my charger cables plugged in, watched Boston Legal DVDs on my television all day, and left my kitchen appliances on for the longest time making some of the most delicious fried food I've ever tasted.
I turned all my lights off~!~! I invited my grandparents to come over and since the weather is sooo nice, we had a cake outside on the porch~!~! ^.^ It was yummy~ The hour flew byyy~!
My lights were off- It was interesting to hear that power usage actually increased in Manitoba during Earth Hour.
It was last night?! I was definitely out in my H2 doing donuts in a parking lot while simultaneously drinking from a styrofoam cup. I think I turned a light off though before I left, not sure. I don't like looking for my keys in the dark, so probably not.
I was at work and we turned off most of the lights and candles instead. It was hard to see what I was doing though.
I dragged my mom to Tim Horton's for some coffee and then I found out that I got the day wrong. I ended up working that day so I never really did much for it. I made sure to call home and tell everyone to turn off the lights!
