I'm on the fence about this. It is oh so very hypocritical from many companies, especially those that put out specific "rainbow" merchandising and it's all too obvious they just want to make money. However, as others mentioned, it may give more visibility, which is probably better than invisibility. And since it IS officialised, it can also be used to root out homophobic people, as well as get back to them at work: after all, if you go to HR about some colleagues being homophobes, they can't very well then tell you to eff off... not after all the merchandising and the official-looking support. Beat them to their own game, is what I say.

I've heard it called "rainbow capitalism". I think it's really unnecessary honestly. Like, it doesn't matter (to me, anyway) whether the shirt I'm going to buy comes from a place that "supports" the community because it doesn't impact the things I find important when considering a purchase (unlike the cost, materials, where it was made, etc.) And what does "support" even mean in this context? That they serve people in the lgbt+ community? If so, most companies do that anyway. That they donate specifically to lgbt+ charities? Most companies probably don't. Or does "support" mean that representatives will march in a pride parade once a year? It just doesn't mean anything to me.
