Well - 1978-2008, still rocking successfully - I guess they're doing better than S-Club7...

^ Actually, "Is that you Mo Dean" wa one of my faves - but the Vid was co cheesy (well, I suppose they all were - like the hair/clothes etc - it was their trademark) that I didn't post it.

Oh - and "Planet Claire" - loved that.

Hehe - well - it may wind up just being you and I Lex - but this is rapidly turning into a "bands I followed when I was their age" thread.

Yeh - well - I like my music - and with the 80's we're talking sort of "My Generation".

OK, next, I'll present Australia's 'Minister for The Environment, Heritage and The Arts'...
...otherwise known as Peter Garrett, M.P. my local Member of Parliament (= Member of the House of Reps for the Americans ). More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Garrett

In his earlier days (well, actually until 2002) he was the frontman for one of the best ever rock bands anywhere - Midnight Oil.

He, and the band's songs, were strongly environmental and political by nature. Their live performances were ALWAYS incredible (I saw them countless times).

The You Tube clips which follow are ALL of live performances - yes, they were THAT good live, tho' I suspect that YouTube doesn't really do them justice). I have to say that he had a pretty amazing stage presence. Around six and a half feet tall, bald headed, powerful, gyrating wildly, limbs flailing everywhere - and always passionate - well, you get the idea...and if you don't...I think you will once you watch the clips.

All songs are from the 80's - but the performances are from 1982 right up to 2000, posted in chronological order - Oh, and listen to the lyrics.

First, seeing as it is Anzac Day tomorrow:
'Armistice day' - live in 1982:

Second is 'The Power and the Passion', at the Capitol Theatre Nov.1982 (I think I might have been there!). Interesting at about 1.40 in how Peter deals with a stage invasion (when you're his size - who needs security!).

Oh - and, one of may favourite lines of all time in this song: 'better to die on your feet that to live on your knees':

Next - 'Put Down That Weapon' - a 1989 performance in Sydney (I might possibly have been there too):

A 1993 performance in Ontario for the next one: - 'Short Memory' - The Oils showing they can inject just as much passion into an acoustic performance:

    Another powerful (and awesome) performance:
'The Dead Heart' - from Newtown, Sydney, 2000:

Finally - from The 2000 Olympics closing ceremony - The Oils (political as ever) thumbed their collective noses at the (then) Howard government by performing their iconic 'Beds are Burning', their anthem of recognition of Aboriginal custodianship of the Australian continent while wearing outfits emblazoned with "Sorry" - a very visible political swipe at the Howard government's refusal to apologise for past transgressions against the Aboriginal people.

Ah yes, Midnight Oil. Or, as they were known here in America, "that bald guy who sang 'Beds Are Burning'."
