I always read here that porn is not a good indicator of sexual orientation, but i also read in 90 percent of the cases that gay man only watch gay porn or straight porn imagining they are the girls. So, following that line of thought, I think it actually is an lndicator. Otherwise, you could get aroused to anything. So which one is it?
I think it’s possible to be aroused by porn in general, just the act of sex can be exciting for some but it isn't about it being women that would turn someone on. I’m not sure if this is the answer you are looking for, I am confused by your question. :s
Ummmm... first, porn is a completely unreliable indicator of sexual orientation. Second, I have no idea where the idea came from that 90% of gay men imagine themselves being the "girls", but that statistic is clearly pulled out of someone's ass and certainly not based on any credible study. It actually sounds like something that would have come out of the reparative therapy or Christian "counseling" communities. Porn is produced to arouse, and arousal (at least for men) is hardwired to ba primarily visual. Different people process visual sexual stimuli in different ways, which is why porn is not a reliable indicator. I would really consider the sources you're getting your information from. They don't sound credible or reliable,
Why not? If lesbians can be aroused by gay male porn, and straight women can be aroused by lesbian porn, so could you be aroused by lesbian porn. Arousal and porn viewing habits don't = attraction. I've heard of *some* gay men who watch straight porn focus on the guy OR imagine themselves in the female position.
I agree with Chip on this one. Porn isn't great for indicating anything. Attraction to people isn't just visual. Porn has very little in common with real sex or dating. It's just not real. Attraction happens on a chemical, biological, emotional level. Using porn as guide ignores all of that.
I did read carefully, and I'm not able to discern any meaning to what you said other than what I addressed. If you can clarify, I'm happy to try again.
I’m gay, and on occasion if I happen across it for whatever strange reason lesbian porn can turn me on. However, it’s not something I look for. Usually a straight friend sends it to me. And in my humble opinion I think it’s more about The fact that two people are getting it on rather than the gender in the video.
Thank you for mentioning how unreliable porn is for indicating orientation, I thought that was disproven back when that "everyone is bi" study was discredited
Like everything else, there's nuance to this. Porn is unreliable because, basically, it is produced specifically to create arousal. So some people will respond basically autonomically to the visual stimuli, regardless of the sex or "parts" being shown. That said, there are plenty, perhaps most, gay men who only are aroused by gay porn and ditto straight people with straight porn. But there's enough variance in there because of the powerful visual stimuli to make porn an unreliable indicator. The fantasies you create in your own mind are a far more reliable indicator.
I mean, if heterosexual men can be aroused by lesbian porn I don't see why homosexual men couldn't. I know that's pretty short and sweet, but still. I think what people really mean when they suggest someone to look at porn to help them discover their sexuality is that people should find what arouses them most. But yeah, porn really isn't the best indicator.
It doesn't really work that way. It might be helpful to know that over 90% of lesbian porn is produced specifically for a heterosexual male audience. Thus, hetero men are aroused by a product produced specifically made to appeal to them. Homosexual men are very unlikely to be aroused by lesbian porn; they simply don't find anything interesting or remotely appealing about it. And the other issue is that, women, in general, have a completely different arousal pathway than men do (it is less driven by visual stimuli) and thus, on the whole, porn is less appealing or or arousing to them, regardless of whether it is heterosexual or homosexual porn. There is some porn that is produced specifically for women (both for lesbian women and, separately, for straight women) but it is a very tiny segment of the market, and the products look nothing like the counterpart products produced for men.
So would it be a safe assumption to say that if a man masturbates to lesbian porn he is straight or bi? Or if he masturbates to straight porn but thinks about fucking the woman he is straight or bi?
I realllllly don't think it's that simple. As Chip said, different people are going to be aroused by different things, but mental fantasies are far better indications. (And by the way, Chip, thank you for the clarification earlier!) Maybe the question I'm curious about is why you feel that porn should necessarily indicate anything? Genuine question.
No, because as I said above at least twice, porn isn't a reliable indicator of sexual orientation. Porn isn't going to give you an accurate gauge of anything. Masturbating to fantasies you create in your own mind is going to be a lot more reliable as a predictor of sexual arousal/attraction.
To go along with this, I haven't found any lesbian porn I've ever liked (be it visual or erotica--I overall prefer erotica), but I can still be attracted to women.
I think that people tend to confuse arousal and attraction. People can be aroused by all sorts of things, and that is something that porn is designed to do. It works a little better or worse to arouse depending on the target audience. However, attraction to someone else, another human being, isn't as simple as just being able to be aroused. Reducing attraction to arousal misses a lot of important elements to the whole puzzle.
So either you're being sarcastic, or you aren't reading the nuance I'm attempting to convey into this discussion. For the benefit of readers that might miss sarcasm, let me try again: -- Most gay men who watch porn watch gay porn. Generally speaking, straight men don't find gay porn very interesting. -- Most straight men watch hetero porn or lesbian porn made to appeal to gay men. Generally speaking, gay men don't find lesbian porn or hetero porn very interesting, -- Porn on the whole is watched substantially more by men than by women (whether straight or lesbian.) -- The nature of porn is that it is produced with an intent to arouse. So for some people, they will feel arousal regardless of whether it is straight or gay porn they are watching. THIS is why porn is an unreliable indicator of one's sexual orientation. -- That said, if someone is male, and watches gay porn primarily or almost exclusively, it is hard to argue that this person is straight. So... if you are worried you might be gay because you watch gay porn... while that by itself isn't a reliable indicator, it could point in that direction. And this is where the masturbation-without-porn tests will do a much better job of giving you a reliable answer. Now... I note you identify as gay, so your post may well be tongue-in-cheek, but to ensure that no one else reading this thread misreads your post as genuine, I figured I would clarify. Sarcasm often doesn't come across in the written word.
Me and my girlfriend have watched lesbian porn together, were you can get it online. We are both on our first lesbian relationship, and never been with another woman. So, we have been interested in lesbian porn for some time but came to the belief: is that what we should be doing to each other! We think a lesbian relationship should be about comfort and accepting each other as equals. Lesbian porn, it just feels like its a contest to defeat the other. If a gay man is interested in lesbian porn, it begs the question, how much a same sex relationship should be a contest.
