The crunchier the better. I think it's Gala my dad normally buys.

More seriously...I don't really know for certain. I've never had some of the apples mentioned; as far as I know, they aren't obtainable here.

And it's hard to be sure of the apples I can get, sometimes. I didn't particularly like Fuji apples for years; I could choke one down, but had little interest in doing so. Then, I had a Fuji from an open air fruit market. Probably grown by a small family grower. And, while it didn't become a top favorite, it was so much better than what I'd had before that I was willing to buy them.

Overall, I'd say the best apples are ones from that open air market. I can't remember most types--they had at least one that is not a common variety. The ones they had that are reasonably common that I really liked were Jonagold.

When forced to buy at a regular grocery store, I always buy organic. Apples historically have had huge problems with pesticide residues. Right now, they are #1 on the "Dirty Dozen" list. (Note: this issue could, I'd imagine, vary country to country.). Also organic apples are better tasting. Usually, my buying bias is either Braeburn (probably my favorite), or Jonagold.

Red delicious and cameo. I have to be in a strong mood for a granny smith, but they're great too.

A good Fiji apple is heaven. Galas can also be wonderful. And Honeycrisp.

To me, crispness is as important as sweet/tartness. I can't abide those "sandy-mushy" apples (sorry Macintosh). Red Delicious apples have gone downhill in the past 30 years...much less crisp and sweet than they used to be...like they are bred more for appearance than substance.

I'm thinking maybe Red Delicious is less delicious than it once was. I certainly have noticed the texture change.

I think quality with food has gone downhill over the years. Appearance, ease in shipping, survival in grocery mega chain cold storage are more important than taste, or nutrition.

For that matter, as far as nutrition, if people get really sick from bad nutrition, many grocery stores could benefit. Most stores in my area seem to have a pharmacy these days. Perhaps in the next round of store expansions, they can also add mortuary services. Imagine this PA store announcement:
Eating what we carry--particularly if you buy from our in-store bakery--might kill you! But no worries! Open today, our new funeral services department. Store loyalty card holders receive a 10% discount on all funerals for a limited time, so feel free to drop dead in Aisle 3 today!

And my ranting isn't entirely the ranting of an old fart. I remember noticing quality issues when I was a mere lad. My father had a small vegetable garden. Every fall, there would come a point when we ran out of our home grown carrots. :tears: At that point, I reliably totally lost interest in carrots. The store carrots looked similar, but they didn't taste like carrots.

This is why I like shopping farmers' markets and small fruit stands: the quality is better, and one can find older varieties that were around before crazy scientists got to work.

Apples are my absolute favorite. I've never had an apple I didn't like. My favorites though are Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp, and Golden Delicious apples.

Speaking from Turkey market stands, Red Delicious have very short "perfect" window than... say Fuji. They tend to turn sandy/soft quality in couple of months? (If you think regular harvest time is late oct/nov... they loose their crispy nature by mid Feb/early March)
