Allright folks, this battle isn't lost quite yet.
So-they voted to take away our rights. Now-
it's time to get mobilized and start a
    full-blown civil rights movement.
I won't stand for being treated as a
second-class citizen because of my sexual
orientation, something that I didn't choose,
and I won't let them get away with this.
How is who I choose to marry anyone
    else's business? It's not-and it's not going
to ruin their life if that person is of the same
sex. Homophobia on the other hand, can
ruin families, whether that be families with
gay children, or parents who discover that
they're gay. We have to stand up and make
    ourselves heard.

All the people who voted yes on prop 8 deserve a sharp blow to the temple with a hammer.

52% Yes with 91% reporting. Like Martin said, the younger voters tended to Vote No. So this may be a trend to look forward to in the future. But for right now, Gay Marriage is illegal in California, and all the marriages since May are now invalid.

In the UK, we have circumnavigated this issue by instituting "civil partnership". This is marriage but without the name. It can be between any two people and formally establishes them as next of kin, heir and everything else. Largely used by GLBT instead of marriage, it can also be used by two ageing spinster sisters in case one dies and the other risks losing the house or whatever.

Are they? I know that the married status is "thrown into doubt", to quote a news source, and that there are no specific provisions that say what will happen to gay marriages. I'm not sure if they'll be annulled, though.

I'm so sad... I'm planning on spending at least the next 4 years in school in California... I mean, I don't think I'd get married in the next 4 years, but it'd be a nice thing to look forward to if I got a steady boyfriend.

So now...what's the next step? Is it possible to challenge it again so quickly, or would the Yes on 8 assholes swoop in with another proposal without waiting for the next election? Above all else, we cannot tolerate this. Don't give up, don't gets swept aside, get back up and keep going. Californians, if this thing does pass, and indeed it probably will, I expect nothing short of a civil rights movement from you. Don't just go skulking back to your house, get out there and fight.

Well, pretty much the only way to fight this is to either have California's Congress pass legislation or to challenge it in the USSC. I'm pretty sure some couples who get their licenses annulled are going to be going to court in Washington.

    Loss in California=National victory?

Sorry to be behind, but has it actually been announced whether it has been decided on yet? How close is it/was it?

CNN's ballot measures section currently has Yes-52, No-48 with 92% of the votes in. Unless all the other remaining precincts give overwhelmingly NO responses, Prop 8 has passed.

Sigh, this is a very depressing day for mankind. Today I'm going to be sullen and uncooperative. My own mother voted Yes on 8 =\ At least got to cancel her vote with my No on 8 vote.

That is an excellent point Martin. Remember too that marriage between blacks and whites was ultimately decided by the United States Supreme Court. Its very discouraging but try not to let it get you down. We have alot to be optimistic about. We have a pro-equality President who actually mentioned gays in his acceptance speech. Has that every happened? (!)(!)(!)

I am actually crying right now. I havent cried so much since 8th grade.

All I want to do is crawl into a hole and die.

But I won't. I will not sit by and have my rights be taken away.

I hope they know that they have moved 55 years into the past.

We will fight. And we will win.

O, God, the mormons arent going to sut up about this.

In 2000 prop 22 received a total of 38.6% against a ban on gay marriage. In 8 years we have gained 9/10% additional support. I am very pissed off that Prop 8 looks like it is going to pass, but with such a huge jump in support it's a breath of fresh air to know that things are changing, and if it carries on at this rate then the future could actually be very bright for us. It has probably failed now, but in 3/4 years time we will most likely be equal or ahead of them if the results follow the same pattern they have now.

On a seperate note, apparently some Mormons are coming into a sociology lesson at college next week. I am just hoping they don't get put in my lesson or it may just turn into a prop 8 war.

I'm deeply saddened, not to mention angry at the fact that it looks like it's going to pass. I had hoped that the more sensible minded among the American population would be able to see passed religious propoganda and vote for equal rights. Aside from the entire gay community, those I feel most sorry for are those who live in the affected states, and simply want to commit to one another the same way straight people can.

Hopefully you're right Martin, and in a few years the result will be different.

I'm deeply saddened by this. I really thought Prop 8 would be defeated. It's absolutely sickening to think that people could vote to remove rights from others.

Well its passed, and hope for humanity is just lessening more and more. However (metaphorically speaking of course) The battle was lost, but the war isn't over
