    I pulled out a knife and advanced on the meddling child, ready to kill. The child was surprisingly agile, and dodged when I tried to stab it. No matter.. I'll just corner it. I thought. I feinted, slashed, and stabbed in a flurry of strikes, driving the child into a corner. The child somehow managed to open a window and crawl out before I could kill it, although it sustained several deep gashes.
    Well, shit.

    The cell was dank, filled with the fetid odor of human shit and rotting meat. It was small, too, only about the size of a walk-in closet, too small for you to stretch out all the way when you slept. Piles of at droppings were in every corner and the rats themselves ran over your toes, sometimes biting them and pulling out chunks of flesh. Every morning your body would have small pits where the rats ate you. Today was the day of the execution, and most people would welcome death as an escape from the stink and the rats. The jail was relatively low-security, only a few guards here and there that pretended to be awake while they slept. They relied on your broken spirit to keep you from trying to leave. The door wasn't even locked; you had tried it earlier.
