For those who know who Dan Savage is. What is your opinion on him? He has done some good things like the it gets better project and other things about gay rights but he also said some pretty biphobic things, used transphobic slurs and other questionable stuff
Well he has a history of being accused of biphobic and transphobic. While Dan Savage does do some good things (like the It Gets Better program), personally I think he's a bit of an asshole, I find him rather gauche, and I am embarrassed that he somehow became the face and spokesman for gay men in the eyes of millions of straight Americans.
I know little about him and I just did the most cursory of research them (Googled his name and read the short bio for him). He apparently created the It Gets Better initiative. Judging solely by that (as i'm too tired to do any more) I voted positive. ---------- Post added 18th Jun 2013 at 03:43 AM ---------- I lied, I couldn't help but look him up after I saw people disagree. He's said a lot of stupid stuff by the looks of it but a friend of mine was so largely helped by the It Gets Better program that I am too grateful for that.
People on both sides of the Dan Savage debate have so much vitriol that I just stay away from it because I don't see how I can benefit in any way from getting involved. Call it intentional apathy.
More positive than negative, maybe because I was more aware of him when he was getting started and he was carving out a niche. He says some perceptive things. I don't follow him much. That he's decent looking doesn't hurt his being listened to or followed either.
One of the most prominent and well-spoken advocates for the "gay and lesbian" community. Perhaps some day he'll mature on his positions regarding the rest of us queers.
I can't begin to explain how much I hate Dan Savage. Hate is a strong word, but no stronger words in the English language fit perfectly to describe how I feel about him.
I tend to think he's very uptight, and comes off as something of a prude, not to mention pretentious. It's like he's constantly shouting, "Look at me! I'm breaking all these barriers! Rawr! Behold my brilliance". OK, maybe later. I find him tiresome even if he tries to do 'good' things.
Given that he only gives a shit about white cis gay men, and is an asshole about everyone who isn't, I'm going with negative.
I voted Other, cause although he's done nice things for the gay and lesbian community like It gets better and the definition of Santorum, he's also biphobic and transphobic and honestly this post made me very very sad and sorry that he's the face of the LGBT community to many straight and gay Americans.
He sure writes a lot and gets plenty of air time. I don't make time to listen to as many media people as I once did. Is there a reason why he has this attitude that he's disclosed or can be read between the lines?
The main reason would be his hugely inflated ego, and his general inability to admit that he can be wrong. Reading back over some of his stuff, I'm reminded of how much I also hate his snarky attitude. He seems needlessly cynical, condescending and catty.
Unfortunately, the word catty is often applied in a stereotypical manner to gay men. There's catty mean and catty funny. The mean-spirited version is pretty uncool.
when he spoke at my university he said every couple is a little "open" as in open relationship and it pissed me off. Everything else in his talk was fine...but that pissed me off especially knowing he has a son with his husband. It's like, yeah that's teaching your son good morals, bravo.
