A law coming into effect Friday, January 7, 2022, will ban conversion therapy making it a crime to provide or promote services intended to change or repress a person's sexual orientation or gender identity. "With the new law, Canada’s criminal code will prohibit forcing someone to undergo conversion therapy; taking a minor abroad to take part; and profiting from, promoting or advertising the practice. Violations can draw sentences of up to five years’ imprisonment." https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/06/world/canada/canada-conversion-therapy-law.html
Hawk.....I can only wish the US would do the same thing. But we are so religious. Our religions care for the souls of our people while they encourage our LGBTQIA+ youth to be tortured. David
I'm very happy for Canada. I'm glad a few US states have banned it, but I'd like there to be a federal law against conversion therapy. Hell I'll take the supreme court striking down conversion therapy as unconstitutional, though I can tell if that would actually hold up in court.
What if this country was just turning into what it was meant to be but people kept intervening and made us restart?
This is amazing. I hope the US adopts a similar bill to this next. It's pretty rock solid and it also includes not traveling abroad with the minor to get conversion therapy.
I know. I wish the same. Blue states are likely to pass laws against conversion therapy while red states, which usually have a lot of religious bigots with narrow minds, are more resistant to doing this. I don't think they can come up with many - if any - examples of where it has worked. But there are way too many examples of where it has mentally tormented people.
Considering the US is struggling with state legislatures intentionally bullying lgbt kids in red states, I’m not optimistic. Not unless a loooot of states flip. Which, I’m terrified of the House flipping this fall. The current GOP clearly haaaaaates us. A lot. Happy for Canada, though.
I know this has no relation to this post but: What if the U.S banned and illegalized any and all forms of: racism, abuse, and discrimination? Plus, what if the U.S made the Confederate flag, beliefs, and practices illegal? Then, and only then, will the U.S be an equal and fair country.
