Since "being gay" is somehow new to me, I haven't had the chance to watch many LGBT movies. But I watched The Handsome Devil and I loved it. It's no big deal, really, but it's simple and so light hearted but yet it touched me so deeply...perhaps because I could see myself in the character...so I just loved it and I'm looking forward to watching it again. Also want to watch Brokeback Mountain, which I haven't yet.
It's very good. I love all of the musical spots in the movie and how they use his songs to tell the story. I also like how nearly every star of the movie sings at some point. Another one I recommend is Lez Bomb. It's out (no pun intended) on DVD now (not sure about Netflix, Amazon, etc.). Writer/director Jenna Laurenzo plays the lead in this hilarious tale about a woman who decides that Thanksgiving is the time to tell her family that she's gay and introduce them to her girlfriend of six months. She makes numerous attempts to come out to her family, but people won't let her finish a sentence. This adds to confusion when her girlfriend shows up and believes that the truth has been told. Adding to the confusion is the male roommate who everyone assumes is her boyfriend. Other family drama adds to the hilarity of this movie. There are some serious moments in this movie, like the fact that her failed attempts to come out nearly cost her her relationship with her girlfriend. The movie also stars Caitlin Mehner as the girlfriend along with Kevin Pollack, Steve Guttenberg, Clois Leachman, and Bruce Dern.
Giant Little Ones wasn't a bad film. It is a more realistic story of the struggles of LBGT youth than most movies of its kind. Not overly sad (has its moments) and not overly campy. Just life. Dean
I just watched Booksmart, which I didn't realize was an LGBT movie before hand, but Kaitlyn Dever's character is a lesbian, and at their school, boys and girls use the same bathroom (none of them are transgender). Overall, this movie was hilarious. I cannot remember the last time I laughed so hard. There is a lot of crude humor and sexual references in this, so if you really don't like that kind of stuff, you should avoid it. I, myself, usually don't go for crude sexual humor, but this movie was just too funny.
I saw Rocketman a few months ago and loved it Also, 'Love, Simon' I saw a while back and really liked.
I just watched the 2020 movie “The Thing About Harry” online. It stars Niko Terho as Harry, a former high school bully who now is out as bisexual. The other character, Sam (played by Jake Borelli), who was out as gay in high school, had been bullied by Harry but ends up friends with him. It was a fun romantic comedy. Worth watching.
My first, still favorite and personally most important LGBT movie was "Total Eclipse" about Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine, 19th century French poets, so if you're into these topics (and into young Leonardo DiCaprio, because come on, he was insanely hot ), I totally recommend to watch this one, even if it's quite old (1995). And almost all of Xavier Dolan's movies <3 I just didn't really enjoy "The Death and Life of John F. Donovan", anyone have seen it? I was trying to watch it like 3 or 4 times, and sleeping was always a better choice, so I'd really like to know anyone else's opinion, I don't like being dissapointed with one of my favorites directors.
Really want to watch it, but haven’t found it on any streaming service here in Finland yet. Watched “In the reeds” recently, which is actually a Finnish lgbt movie.
I haven't seen any gay themed movies yet, (I don't watch many movies to begin with) but I have read a gay themed web comic. its called Castle Swimmer. I highly recommend it.
Cruising and Notre Paradis aren't well-made, but they're a nice break from the usual light and soft romance flicks.
Also a nice break from rom-com movies, Monsoon (2020) with Henry Golding. It's about a gay man who returns to Vietnam for the first time since he was six-years-old, when his family fled the country in the aftermath of the Vietnam-American war. The past weighs heavily on the present. It's slow moving but interesting. Here's the trailer:
