I watched it a couple of days ago and I still can't stop thinking about it, been playing some of the soundtrack over and over and still trying to wrap my head around why this movie touched me so much, i know how keeping such secret for so long feels like and i think i could relate to the movie's character in so many ways. Falling for someone online and being all excited when they reply to your email, feeling so confused sometimes, not knowing why i haven't really told anyone about this (only a couple of girlfriends who took it very well) and so many other things from the movie. Even though its been a couple of days now since i watched the movie it still makes me want to cry and I feel really emotional but i don't even know why.
Haven't seen the movie but read the book. The book is what made me want to talk to other people who are going through some of the things that I am going through.
I read the book back in March, which I LOVED. A couple of weekends ago my roommates and I all watched it. It was a great movie! The book still edges out the movie, but the movie is still SOOOOOO AMAZING. I also own Leah on the Offbeat, but I have yet to read it.
ME !!!!!!! Seriously, I think I watch it five times in one week. On other hand, maybe it is because I met my boyfriend as well as I was watching this film.
I just saw it for the first time, and I did love it. Simon is such a lovable guy in this. I would say it's the best movie of 2018 so far and the best LGBT movie I've ever seen.
I bought the book some days ago but I'm still waiting for the delivery. I'm counting down the days until I have it with me. Also, I'd like to watch the film someday.
What are attitudes toward the LGBT community like in Singapore? I would think a 21-and-up rating (higher than the drinking age) would torpedo "Love, Simon" in Singapore by keeping teens and young adults out of the cinemas. That rating was also assigned solely for "homosexual theme." Apparently, Singapore's movie ratings board is pretty prudish about gay content, as this was about the least explicit gay-themed movie ever made.
I would say Simon is portrayed as a cisgender male, but not strongly "masculine" or "feminine." This is a depiction rarely shown in gay-themed films. If he hadn't confessed his secret as the opening credits roll, it would be hard to tell if he is straight or gay until more evidence rolls in. Contrast that to Ethan's coming-out scene, where his friends were not at all gobsmacked by the news. Also, this movie matches my perception that at least in the US, there is more gay acceptance in the upper classes compared to the lower classes.
It won't win a Palme d'Or, but it was fun to watch. Plus, there's a slight physical resemblance between "Bram" and my boyfriend. Well -- my boyfriend four years ago, that is.
I haven't seen the film, but I have read the book. I came up with a test called the 'Even if it was straight?' test, which basically goes along the lines of 'would I still ship those book/film/TV show/whatever characters if it was a straight relationship?'. I feel like due to the scarcity of non-straight media, it's easy to lower your standards as to what qualifies as good quality content. Sometimes it feels like 'has a non-straight couple' is sufficient criteria to justify reading/watching something. Anyhow, if it weren't gay, 'Love, Simon' would be stereotypical and overdone and not lauded in any way, shape, or form. Girl and guy know they go to the same school and are falling for each other but don't know who each other are? Wow, original! But change that to Guy and guy know they go to the same school and are falling for each other but don't know who each other are and suddenly it's a great read. (My friends try to counter this by saying that Love, Simon has additional themes of coming to terms with who you are and all that jazz because the relationship is gay and not straight, and they may have a point).
Oh yeah. If it was hetero, it would be "just another cheesy book/film." But it's nice to watch (or read) a gay-themed story which doesn't end with a breakup, a murder, or someone dying of AIDS.
After reading this thread at 1AM I'm now searching for it online. looks like I'm gonna be in my feels in an hour.
I rented it not too long ago and then bought it. It was sweet and I really related to Simon. At least he got a happy ending.
It have a happy ending, the best part is Simon's friend, they are so loving and supportive. And Simon boyfriend is so good-looking.
