Exactly. Not to mention, state legislators couldn't actually pass such a bill as it would be in direct violation of numerous federal laws. If he truly wanted to be successful in passing such a bill, then he should have taken it higher up. It would have still gotten struck down, but if it would have hypothetically passed on that level than it would at least hold some authority. Realistically, western powers wouldn't dare pass legislation such as this at this point in history because it would alienate them from a plethora of allies on an international scale and cause internal revolt. Regardless of how homophobic certain citizens might be, citizens tend not to turn blind eyes to the slaughtering of their fellow citizens without reason. It is unfortunate that we as a whole could not care less about the lives on those who don't live in the western European/American world who are victimized as a result of legislation such as this every day. .
I find it hilarious and wonder if the (assumably intelligent) lawyer is just getting a laugh out of trolling everyone. 1 million dollar fine for spreading gay propaganda? Absurd numbers and punishments suggest this is just for fun or attention. It's not even going to get close to passing and if it did it would be a shitstorm that just isn't going to happen. The international community, let alone the United States, won't let this just happen. Plus California can say goodbye to Hollywood. They should have tried this in Texas if they actually legitimately wanted a chance (;
All it does it make homophobes look like stupid rabid lunatics. The worse the image of homophobia gets, the better. This guy's doing us a service as far as I'm concerned.
Even if this makes it onto the California ballot, it's a guaranteed fail. Also, I can't wait to see the commercials about it.
The good news here is that, hopefully we can file a Freedom of Information Request and get the signatures. We want them to stand up and be counted, so we can hunt them down and hold them accountable.
I posted this in the last thread about this measure, but I'll post it again here: We all know this bill isn't going to pass. I don't care, that's not the point here. The point is that there are pieces of shit like the assholes trying to pass this ballot, and that alone, in and of itself, regardless of whether or not this bill passes, is bad enough. And the fact that these kind of people are out there, regardless of whether or not they do end up taking people's lives, is enough to severely damage, and even destroy, the lives of LGBT individuals out there, and that is NOT ok.
As that article says, this bill should remind us that despite the advances made there are still people in America that would wish us harm. This guy's clearly a few sandwiches short of a picnic and his measure has no chance of getting on the ballot. But there are other bills out there that are likely going to pass, pushed through by vindictive malcontents that think they're doing God's work under the guise of protecting freedom. That's the thing people should be talking about and the laws & legislators that should be called out, not some attention seeker with an axe to grind.
A prison officer in New York has been suspended for posting a Facebook status in support of this. He seems to have a pretty nuanced stance on his approach to gay people... Homophobic Facebook comments land corrections officer in hot water - City & Region - The Buffalo News Yes, that's right: Fly rainbow flags. Proportionate response: Death. According to a prison officer. This is possibly the most extreme version of the "I don't mind gay people as long as they do whatever they do in private" stance that I've seen.
This bill is just a waste of time for them really. Just because they cannot kill it does not mean they will pass it.
Excellent. Now, time to laugh at it as it fumbles its way on the ballot. I would love to see the guy behind this defend it. :badgrin:
This won't pass in the least. Even some of the homophobes are not this pathetic but then again, I am never surprised by how dumb and ignorant America is.
"Do you hate gays as much as we do? Do you wish you could just shoot them in their faces? If you do, then vote yes on the Sodomite Suppresion Act. The Sodomite Suppression Act We see no way how this can backfire."
What we need to do is figure out who the supporters of this ballot initiative are so we can avoid them, shame them, boycott their businesses, etc. Also, happy sodomizing, everybody!
