Pretty much anything made by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in The Shell, Patlabor)
Also EVERYTHING by Satoshi Kon: Paprika, Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Paranoia Agent, Tokyo Godfathers, Memories. The last one is a collection of 3 short films, one by Kon and 2 by Katsuhiro Otomo.
Speaking of Katsuhiro Otomo, he's the creator of Akira; you might want to check out his other work such as Steamboy.
Makoto Shinkai is good, too: check out Children Who Chase Lost Voices and Garden of Words. I haven't explored Shinkai's filmography very thoroughly, I've only seen the first of my suggestions and the other's on my watchlist.

Makoto Shinkai, hailed as the next Miyazaki has a lot of great works. To back you up:

    -Voices Of A Distant Star
-The Place Promised In Our Early Day (one of my personal favorites)
-5 Centimeters Per Second (only if you wanna feel depressed and cry after...go for it. Still a good film... but damn.)

    ---------------

    Other great suggestions are:
    -Summer Wars
    -Wolf Children
Both are extremely great films. Which I think were done by the same person.

And a more unknown title but also extremely great:
-Sword Of The Stranger (this movie is fantastic)

I completely agree with this one. I was reluctant at first because the last thing I needed to use up my time was another anime, my friend made me watch the first episode, been hooked since. Like oh my :***:ing god it's epic!

One Piece! Best anime ever! I mean, it's gotten me to watch 650+ episodes so it must be pretty good... I'm usually pretty ADD.

I also enjoyed full metal alchemist brotherhood, which someone mentioned.

Fruits Basket is good and funny.

Summer Wars (someone mentioned) wasn't my favorite. Then again, I got bored halfway through and didn't finish (see my ADD?))

I'll have to think of some more.

Let me know if you get around to the couple that I suggested! I would love to talk more to people about those since all of my friends haven't gotten into them. Good luck wading through all the awesome that's been presented here. I am sure you will find lots that you love.

Michiko to Hatchin! It has queer and genderfluid characters as well.

I like traditional Japanese culture, so Rurouni Kenshin is one of my favorites.
