The bill was passed last summer, but the first gay weddings have only taken place today. Things like this take a while to happen in the UK, I guess they were smoothing out practical and legal issues. This would explain why people thought UK already had gay marriage maybe.

Though it's not the whole of the UK. Scotland will be following suit soon, but gay marriage in Northern Ireland seems a long way off still, which is a shame.

Still though, good news! Brightened my day.

Woohoo! Way to go, U.K. Congratulations  I wish the U.S. would hurry up and legalize gay marriage nationwide.

Civil Partnerships have been legal in the UK for years, to all you confused folks, it's the same as marriage in every way but name.

Yay for England and Wales! And also Scotland soon! The UK is ahead of America. Hopefully seeing gay marriage legalized in the UK will help convince the US to hurry up and legalize it. But either way, congratulations to (most) of the United Kingoms! (Isn't the UK minus Ireland called Britain? Or am I mistaken?)

I was also under the impression that gay marriage was already legalized in the UK. At least it is now in most places!

The UK is Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England. Britain is the actual island which includes all of them except for N.Ireland.

But Britain is used interchangeably with the UK. Even our Olympic team is called Team GB.

I always thought it was legal in the U.K

    ---------- Post added 30th Mar 2014 at 12:02 PM ----------

Yea, but I thought English people don't like being called Brits, and Welsh people don't like it, and Irish and Scottish.

I thought people there still identified their nationality by their geographical location
and hardly ever refer to themselves as British.

Nah. People generally refer to themselves by their individual country first, and British second, but there's no stigma against calling yourself British at all. It's used universally by the media anyway seeing as though it's the correct term.

In fact your post is the first time I've ever heard of that, which shows how false that rumour is.
