I heard that Hurricane Irene has made shore and is doing damage, are there any people who have had to move and what are your thoughts?
They evacuated all the coastal areas so far and shutting all mass transit in like 15 minutes. I don't know how bad it's really going to get considering the weather websites are referring it more so as a tropical storm. Bright side, I didn't have to go to work. Down side, I can't go anywhere. >_< And I get the feeling the city is overreacting because they're trying to cover their asses and/or make up for the blizzard mess last winter.
some of my friends and coworkers in coastal towns are under mandatory evacuation orders. it's just begun to rain here, but the storm won't really arrive til tomorrow morning i think
You guys are making floridians chuckle Naw, but I do agree that overreacting is better in these situations than allowing people to get hurt. Hope everyone is safe
I personally think a lot of people are over-reacting, because the storm has hit where I live, and all its done is rain, no real wind or anything else
I think a lot of people of overreacting wayyy to much about this storm. The wind hasn't been too bad and we have hardly gotten any rain so far in Western Maryland.
It's because you're on the gay side of the street. It's been a blustery day here in Alabama. It's been a nice reprieve from the unrelenting heat and humidity, actually.
Exactly. It's been raining forever and the wind has knocked out a few power lines here in Central Maryland.
Over-reaction in my opinion. I think the survivors of Severe TC Yasi would sleep through this one. As it happens, I'm relatively knowledgeable on the weather for my age, and cyclones typically weaken as they head further south north up in your hemisphere :icon_bigg The storm surge shouldn't be that big, and the only reason it would be like Katrina is because nobody builds cyclone-resistant houses. + New Orleans is below sea level. It's my big fear that when a cyclone comes down to "it never rains here" Brisbane that all the 'Mexicans' (people from Southern Australia) don't know that Brisbane can get some really bad cyclones.
cyclone: Hurricane: . .. ... .... ..... .... ... .. . OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AUSTRALIA!
So on the Weather Channel they were shooting live and this guy in the background had his swim trunks fall down. Showing his junk on national TV.
It doesn't seem TOO bad from what I've seen, considering how much news coverage there is. Of course, deaths and mass power outages are obviously terrible, but if a storm just as strong hit a similarly densely populated area in the south east Asia, the world wouldn't hear about it. ---------- Post added 28th Aug 2011 at 03:18 PM ---------- BBC News - Typhoon Nanmadol kills eight in the Philippines In fact, a google has told me that there's a Typhoon ongoing in the Philippines right now, which has caused 8 deaths as opposed to 9 from Irene. I've seen no coverage of this and oh so much of Irene, even though neither affect Europe.
I assumed the fear in NY was the vulnerability of Manhattan concerning high water and sea-levels. I know that historically NY floods every so often, but far enough in between that people forget. Is this hyped up beyond that, or? Haven't been reading up on this in detail, been busy the last 2 days.
Cyclone can just refer to a generic low pressure system. I'm pretty certain those types of weather systems are called cyclones in the South Pacific, typhoons in Asia and hurricanes in the Atlantic. They're all practically the same thing, except cyclones spin the opposite way. Silly English!
