    A dutch man

Wiki doesn't leave any explanation or symbolism in this picture though.
That's why I need someone to tell me WHAT exactly is going on. I know it's Adam and Eve but why is everything so MESSED UP?

    Well, the last picture seems to be one of hell?? With all the dark and such around it: Death, fire, pits, pigs x_x;
I'm not sure what exactly the middle one represents.

Alright this is what the painting is about.
One day Adam and Ever were lying around in the grass all naked and Jesus comes upp. And god comes up and is all like, "Me and your mom are going to go on a cruise for a few days. You kids be good, and NO PARTIES."

So God and Mother God left leaving the two kids alone. Well Adam and eve got out thier cellphones did some TXT's and HAD THE BIGGEST MOST AWESOME party ever. But then Satan and his Frat bro's come over to the garden and start trashing the place. A few keg stands later. This house is completly trashed and Adam and Eve are grounded (in more then one way)

    LA FIN

I love the above explanation, but here is my interpretation:

Adam and Eve were happy in the garden of Eden, until they fell victim to sin, whereupon they were cast out and started the human race.

The human race, being descendants of sinful Adam and Eve, naturally also fell victim to sin and decadence, thus the middle painting, which I take to be almost an orgy of such decadence.

However, because decadence and gluttony are, after all, sins, God was none to pleased. Therefore he sent fire and brimstone upon the sinners (like in the story of Sodom and Gomorrah), resulting in painting number three.

Oh I remember this painting from Art History. I think suburbs of sodom pretty much hit it on the nail. Also inarut.. in a way. ("grounded in more than one ways".. hahaha)

    Funfact: It's a triptych!

Perchance sodomy with flowers might represent the pollination and seed of sin that Satan has planted in the ilk of mankind, which, further-down on during the gestation period will proliferate freely and thrust God's perfect world down a vortex teeming with sin - sin that will ferment, seemingly laying dormant until judgment day, whereupon it will become apparent that the very original ilk that pumps through our own veins is tainted beyond recomprehensible means!

My degree in art finally pays off...!!
The painter is Hieronymous Bosch. Some speculate that he may have been at least marginally psychotic because there are psychotics who paint this way. I just think he was a very early fantastic realist.

OK. I know the painting and it's one of my favorites.

LEFT PANEL: The garden of Eden, the world before sin.

CENTER: The Garden of the Earthly Delights, the world consumed by sin.

RIGHT PANEL: The aftermath of what is depicted in the center - hell.

Bosch was an interesting character - his paintings are loaded with heavy symbolism, yet no one knows exactly what they mean. We know little about his life... he seemed to love owls though. See if you can find the owl in this one.

The painting is at the moment part of the collection at the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain.
