When I came out to them when I was eighteen and my mum's response was surprise because she'd be expecting that conversation to happen in my mid-twenties.

She also asked when I was fourteen, whilst I was talking about my ideal partner in my German homework (she asked if that person was a he or she and I just panicked). There were also the various times my family used "husband...or wife???" when talking about my future. I'd say this started in my early teens. So the possibility certainly occurred to them. There were still plenty of jokes about me having a secret boyfriend but gradually these became more neutral.

"Huh, I thought you'd come out later" was not exactly the response I had expected though. I guess I should've seen it coming.

When my mother died (nearly 30 years after I came out) I finally realized that she would never accept me for who I am (nor has anyone else in my family).

I don't think they always knew. When I came out, they said I always had a masculine personality and that they wondered if I'm gay when I went to college, because I had a lot of male friends who I had no attraction to whatsoever, mom apparently noticed who my girl crush was, but that was it. Ah, my granddad also thought my high school friend was my girlfriend, but... she wasn't and I didn't crush on her either, so I don't know why he thought that, maybe I came across as masculine or uninterested in guys like above.

Some parents definitely know. Others are utterly clueless.

My mother seemed like she knew. She was clueless. My dad still is clueless. My mother hadn’t found it weird her 23 year old daughter had never had a boyfriend and my dad doesn’t find it weird his 29 year old daughter never had a boyfriend. My mother was shocked when I told her. My sister literally said tell me something I don’t know.

my parents never thought about it, and never questioned it.

they were too busy with my sister anyway lol so I guess I just wasnt on their mind (granted my sister is only a year and 10 months younger)
