True, but Neville was still in the first year at that time...so 11 or 12, so technically the hat was still judging him on traits that he showed at that age. My question was more if the hat could tell what someone would be like at an older age, 13...14...15..16..17...or whether it could only predict the first year... What I find interesting about Neville is that he wanted to be Hufflepuff, but the hat said no...yet Peter Pettigrew managed to get into Gryffindor and he's hardly a model Gryffindor. I know people have explained that he got in because he valued Gryffindor values, which outweighed the fact he's incredibly cowardly, but...this suggests that maybe Neville didn't value Hufflepuff traits enough (if that's the case, why would he want to be a Hufflepuff then? Because he liked herbology and that seems to be a popular subject with Hufflepuffs, so he thought he would fit in due to a potential shared interest? I think he liked herbology anyway...if I remember correctly that is.)...or maybe the hat could tell he was going to be useful to Harry, and that he'd fit in with the rest of the main characters... Thoughts? Sorry, kind of hijacking the thread here, aren't I?
