I know it varies from country to country and even state to state, but I feel like my family eats way earlier than other families. I feel like most Americans eat around 6-7pm. My family tends to eat anywhere between 4pm-6:30pm I just feel like 7 is too late for dinner.

So what time do y'all usually eat dinner?

Uh... it kinda depends. We try to keep the kiddos on a schedule, especially during the school year. But generally we try to have dinner sometime in between 6 and 7. It kinda depends on what’s being cooked and what not but they usually do homework/chores until dinner is ready. Then usually it’s free/quiet/activity time after. If it’s still light outside, they play outside, etc. Then baths and bed.

If me/my fiancé are home, we eat with the family. But if I’m at work/practice/football game/competition/etc it uh. Well. *shrug* Whatever time I get a free moment, or when I get home. If it’s game/comp I might grab a hotdog/burger. Or it might not be anything if I’m hot. Concert nights I might not eat at all.

We usually start cooking around 6pm or a little after. So we are done eating before 7pm.

My dad worked shift work most of my life, so we'd eat around 4 pm or 7:30-8 pm.

Now he's retired and it ranges from 4:30-7:30.

Whenever I feel like it. Sometimes 2 pm, sometimes midnight, sometimes 4 am. I go out of my way not to eat at the same time every day. As a kid my family had oldschool "family dinner time" where we'd all sit awkwardly and be forced to talk about our day just like an old TV show. There's only so many thousands of times you can reword "nothing happened" and sit awkwardly in silence for an hour before you start to really not like hard-coding that stuff into your schedule.

I try to eat around 6pm to 7. Often I get up super late, like 1pm or even 3...so I end up skipping dinner or eat at 10pm

It's a combination between whenever my mother feels like and which week my uncle is on night shift. It can range from between 4 PM to 9 PM.

I always try to have my dinner early. And by early I mean around 7.
It is considered early here comparing to the time other people eat their dinner.

It has been a question in my mind. I mean all of daily meals' (In the west). So, People eat 3 meals there, right? It has been a bit confusing for me. I mean 4pm?! Then when do they have their lunch?
It's just from some novels I've read. It seems sometimes dinner served quite early at afternoon.
So, If I eat my lunch at 1 pm, I can't eat that early! How you do that? Perhaps your lunch isn't so much?

Usually around 5pm but lately it’s been after 6 because when it’s still super hot outside, I don’t have much of an appetite.

Most here have lunch between 11am-1pm with 12 usually being the time most people eat (maybe 2pm at the latest, but thats a rarity).

It's actually the opposite for me. Shows and books I've read/seen characters tend to eat dinner later.

See for me personally (idk if other) Americans feel this way) 7pm is too late for dinner. Most of my evening shows start at either 7 or 8pm and I want to be done with dinner by that time to watch them. Especially since I usually have a snack during those shows so it would make sense to have dinner earlier.

I work graveyard shift, so I usually have my dinner around 1:30p. But during the two months that I was off work, I was eating lunch around 1:30 and dinner around 8 or 9p.

Ah, I see. Then maybe that's it. You eat lunch a little sooner.
Actually I remember I read such things in a medieval-themed novel. But it's too long to find those parts now.

Right. So snacks could be another reason. Because I was thinking you would feel hungry at late night.

    1 AM :>

Thing is I go to bed immediately after work, and then wake up around midnight and that's when I have dinner.

Before the pandemic hit I couldn't do that because I had to go to the gym every night so I would have "dinner" by 8 PM, however then I was on a 5 meal schedule instead of the 3 I'm having now. I would still have something to eat around 2 or 3 AM.

I eat at sometime between 6 and 9, with times varying based on day-to-day schedule and time of year.

    @BothWaysSecret
I just read this in the Narnia novel: The next thing he realized was that the daylight was almost gone, for it had been nearly three o’clock when they sat down to dinner and the winter days were short.

This is confusing at first, Because in school we were told that dinner is the nightly meal. But I realised the definition of dinner is kinda different in the west. Here, We don't call a meal "dinner" unless if it is eaten at night. If we have a meal between lunch and dinner (afternoon) we will use another word for it.

English dictionaries tell dinner is usually eaten in early evening or even midday (Hadn't noticed that).

Also Longman dictionary has a good comment about it:
WORD CHOICE: dinner, supper, tea, lunch
In Britain, the main meal of the day is dinner and it is usually eaten in the evening. Some people call this meal supper, but to others supper is a very small meal that is eaten just before they go to bed. Some people call this main evening meal tea, but to others tea is a small meal that is eaten in the afternoon.
Some people use dinner to refer to the meal they eat in the middle of the day, but if you want to be clear that you are referring to this meal, use lunch.
