    Hey guys,

I know this changes from person to person, but I was wondering how you would define being in love with someone? Beyond caring and being there for them, how do you know you're in love with someone?

    Love is quite simple really
Its a simple chemical reaction with high amounts of chaos
as sherlock says: "The chemistry is incredibly simple and very destructive"

When you're close to someone, when you're being intimate and doing intimate things, your pulse will elevate, leaving your heart to pump more blood (for obvious reasons) and your pupils will dilate.

Though thats probably not what you wanted to hear.
If your asking yourself what is love, then you're probably in love, and this is your first time, congrats, now dont anything drastic just yet until you know the person you love loves you just as much, you might embarrass yourself.
    Goodluck ; )

That's just it though, does love have to involve doing intimate things? And what exactly is considered intimate other than the obvious?

I feel like I could be in love. I've never felt anything like this before, but I'm not sure what to call it. I'd be willing to put a name to it and call it love if I had to but I feel a bit lost because I don't feel that pull of wanting to be intimate with the person.

I haven't done anything too drastic yet, but unfortunately I don't think the person loves me like I love them :/

Not to be a crotchety old person or anything but I meant this as a serious question...

No, you're right. We're kind of going of track here. Sorry about that.

Dangit, y’all beat me to the “Baby don’t hurt me” part!

Honestly though...I guess love is an emotion or a feeling or a chemical reaction between people who care deeply for one another supposedly. I don’t know if I believe much in romantic love though. The only love I truly feel is for my mom...she’s my best friend and the best mother in the world.

That's just it though, is caring deeply for someone and wanting to be there for them all it takes to 'love' someone? As someone who up until this point has not experienced romantic love, how do I know that what I'm feeling is not just that feeling of caring for someone but something deeper?

love the quote by the way

Another way of defining love, apart from the chemical process -
Is the willingness to do anything to be with that person.
And denying it when you can't.
It makes you want to change yourself to be a better doormat for that person
it makes you want to give things for that person
    just for their affection
love can possibly truly change you.

I've never been in romantic love before, but, love is when you put someone's needs before your own. You would risk anything and everything for them. You make sacrifices to make them happy, and don't mind. Love is having enough confidence and kindness that you have room in your heart to share.

Thanks for the input dear! I still don't know what to call what I feel, but you definitely hit it right on the head!

I was going to respond again, but I saw that others have given really awesome responses already haha. I think they pretty much hit the nail on the head; it’s the same way I would have described it. I also think that when you feel a deep love for someone, you’re willing to sacrifice for them and put them first. It’s a strong feeling, so I think once you feel it you’ll know

Love seen as simply a chemical reaction makes for a pretty weak explanation, as does biological reductionism in most cases. Love in usual parlance is a feeling, an attraction, a desire of contact. Whether that be romantic, platonic or sexual is up to you. There is no agreed upon definition; make with it what you will.

How can you tell what the difference between romantic, platonic and sexual love? I can't figure out what I'm feeling is platonic love/friendship or romantic attraction.
