So I keep hearing of some fandom that has something to do with foxes, where the people are called "furries." What is this and what is it about?

    Depends on the context.
In general it refers to people who like to dress up and/or act like animals.

In a specific erotic sense, it means people who get turned by doing the above in explitely sexual scenarios.

AFAIK at least, I could be wrong.

I'm a furry! You can ask me anything about the whole fandom, and I will tell all. There's been some threads on this in the past, but feel free to shoot me a message on my wall, and I'll get back with more to say as soon as I find time. There's not exactly one easy answer, but I've found it very liberating, fun and have met some amazing friends, that have helped me a great deal.

Well, I learned something from this post but I'll get to that in a second.

When I saw the word "furry," for a while I thought it just meant a hairy guy. Ok, cool.

When I learned what a "furry" was, I was surprised. It would have never crossed my mind.

As for the link, there's an interesting subsection on sexuality. It says the alternative lifestyles are represented 10x as much in "furry fandom." Then, it even gives numbers. It says that 1.7% of Americans identify as homosexual and 1.8% of Americans identify as bisexual. Taking only a homosexual identity into consideration, that means less than 1 in 50 Americans. That's on the low side. I haven't seen an estimate that low in a long time.

It does seem as if there's a vastly higher number of LGBT folks in the furry community/fandom. In fact, it's where I first started to understand the things that transgendered and transitioning people deal with; it very much oponed my eyes to a part of the LGBT community I wasn't very well aware of (This would be about 8-10 years ago). And there do seem to a LOT of bisexual furries; it almost seems like a sort of norm.

But as for the question, I thought I'd post some links to previous threads on the topic here on Empty Closets, as we've had several; so here ya go:

    Furries here?

    Dafuqs a furry?

Poll: Would you date a furry?

Anyone ever gone to a furry con?

    Calling All Furries! <3

    OK, hope these help!

Feel free to shoot me a message anytime and ask away. I'm happy to answer any questions though I've yet to get to go to a con so you'd have to ask Huskypup about that kinda stuff X3

We are a community of people who love anthro animal art.

I can't say anything that everybody else hasn't said, but we are not bad people... most of the time.

Yknow as a bisexual furry, I really do wonder why there are so many of us.

I think manybe it has to do with the fact that the imaginary "furry universe" (that's how I think of it, basically the world in which these anthropomorphic animal characters are supposed to live) doesn't have any of those things that makes being gay/bi/ect difficult in real life
