We Won. 5-4 SCOTUS Ruling. Gay Marriage Is Now Legal Across the United States.

This is literally just breaking. I have no news links. I am watching this live on SCOTUS Blog. The decision is still being read, it was authored by Kennedy. The Sixth Circuit has been reversed. Roberts, Scalia, Thomas, and Alito each wrote individual dissents.

The majority opinion, authored by Kennedy is here.

I'll post more information as it comes across.

I just woke up and my gay "dads" turned on the news and all three of us got really happy and almost cried.

What a great day and a good way to wake up this morning.

It's still early, but it seems the majority opinion avoids giving us heightened scrutiny, and instead relies on dual rationales: Marriage is a fundamental right in which homosexual couples must share, and it would also be a violation of equal protection to extend that right only to heterosexual couples. This echos the Windsor decision.

Chief Justice Roberts read his (29 page) dissent from the bench. This is apparently the first time he has ever done this. Toward the end of his dissent he writes: "If you are among the many Americans--of whatever sexual orientation--who favor expanding same-sex marriage, by all means celebrate today's decision. Celebrate the achievement of a desired goal. Celebrate the opportunity for a new expression of commitment to a partner. Celebrate the availability of new benefits. But do not Celebrate the Constitution. It had nothing to do with it." Trolling Bastard.

The majority bases its conclusion that same-sex marriage is a fundamental right on "four principles and traditions": (1) right to person choice in marriage is "inherent in the concept of individual autonomy"; (2) "two-person union unlike any other in its importance to the committed individuals"; (3) marriage safeguards children and families; (4) marriage is a keystone to our social order.

More analysis coming as the day progresses.

Mission accomplished. I turned on the local news and saw them interviewing the lesbian couple here in Michigan whose case was part of Obergefell, and they're holding back tears.

By the way. Today is now a historical day in American and LGBT History. Today is the day that the Lawrence, Windsor, and now Obergefell decision has been handed down.

Two days from now will be the Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which took place on June 28, 1969. Pride celebrations frequently coincide with this date, so there will be many celebrations taking place at Pride celebrating this ruling.

As one can imagine, this is now very much a historical week for our community.

This is definitely one of those days that I am reminded that for all the crappy things happening in the world, good things also happen to balance it all out. I am thankful.

It's sad that it's taken this long. But what matters is that it finally has happened. Congratulations!

I already live in the more liberal places, but it's very nice to know they've legalized it all across America! We're getting somewhere~

Something is apparently going on at the Supreme Court Main Hall. Police are evacuating everyone. This is from SCOTUSBlog -- they are actually in the building.

"FYI, something is going on in the main hall of the Supreme Court. The police are evacuating the room and forcing everybody outside. We at blog HQ are undisturbed." - Tejinder (SCOTUSBlog)

Wow, good morning everyone. I'm so happy. Happy pride.

This is so awesome. The LGBT community has made so much happen in the past 20 or so years. I'm thankful that I'm around to see the results of so many hard working people who have fought for my rights.
