Anything g flashing - especially on a web site/app - is hazardous to people w certain neurological conditions such as epilepsy and migraine. I know it seems cool but It violates ADA accessibility standards and is overall a poor design because it distracts from the main content.

For this reason you rarely see anything flashing on platforms developed since 2000,

Speaking as someone who has epilepsy and also has designed websites and learned accessibility standards and reformatted sites for them it technically does not violate ADA. ADA only recommends a minimal use of flashing, rightfully so, of course.

Flashing is poor design choice, I definitely agree there, but a few avatars here and there (I, for one, have never seen a single one in all my time on this site) technically doesn't violate ADA in anyway.

@Wan2Luv Are you talking about the little green flasher in an avatar at the top left corner for when a person is online?

I haven't seen a flash avatar on here yet either so maybe ^ what I asked above.

Maybe that's what she was going for? Even then, that's not at a fast enough pace to trigger a seizure. I don't have light sensitive epilepsy, but I've learned my shit about my disorder and it takes a certain amount.

Not that I've seen an avatar on here that flashes or anything, I haven't seen every person's avatar, but maybe she saw someone's avatar that changes colour or something?

I still agree with you though because I've never seen anything on here that really flashes, and- I could be wrong- but I don't think the online green button would cause harm. That's literally the only moving thing I've seen on here.

I imagine those avatars have to be much worse for someone with epillepsy, but for me they cause nausea. Just please, stop it...

Sounds like we have similar backgrounds. I also have epilepsy and work in web design. I’m at a bsnk and they have strict rules about ADA.

I’ve seen a couple of flashing avitars. I am new to this site so maybe they’re less common than I thought. The green “I’m online” button seems ok.

I assume you meant to type bank. The bank might have specifics, but I was pointing out the actual guidelines of ADA and just clarifying that flashing does not technically violate. Flashing and the like falls under further recommendations not an actual standards or rule.

Noting that while we didn't answer before, we are discussing this internally.

Feel free to message us or create a report in case of an avatar that could be harmful, so we can check the situation.
