Pads & Tampons (Men beware!)

Discussion in 'Physical & Sexual Health' started by ccdd, Jul 8, 2008.

  1. Congrats, Helen! You're possibly the first EC-er to try the Mooncup!

It is pretty thick... looks kinda scary to me. But I do want to try one. Is it... all gross... when you take it out?

    Thanks for the warning :roflmao:.

Although I've been discussing it with some people in real life (who swear by it) so I am going to try it still, I think...and I will post my own personal experience so that the women of EC have yet another guinea pig, who try these things out so they don't have to!

Sorry it was such a harrowing experience, that's horrible. Hope it wasn't too painful/gruesome/messy (*hug*). But at least now you know you've tried, so you know it doesn't work - kudos to you for trying something different!

Helen, have your choice of sticker. Seriously. I wouldn't have had one of them.

And CCDD can have one too if she gets a mooncup

    Here is a shoking statistic:
If you menstruate for 33 years (age 12-45) and you use about 20-25 pads per cycle, you will throw away 8,000-10,000 pads! That's a lot of trash - and a lot of money and resources in the landfills.

Please excuse me if this has already been mentioned, but there are cloth pads out there. The most eco friendly option there is besides free-bleeding. Once they are full of blood, wash them in the sink with cold water to get most of the blood out, then put it in the wash. Pretty easy.

A company that sells moon cups and washable pads and underwear with the cloth pad in it (suitable only for wearing when you are on your period though): http://www.lunapads.com/
A type of cloth pad: http://www.gladrags.com/

I'm probably being nit picky here, but what do you do while you are wasshing it? Do you have to buy two and switch every time one needs a wash?

    *decides to check site*

I would buy a couple and then switch off. Once they are full of blood, I would put it in the wash, and I would get out a new one. Cloth pads are pretty cheap, especially in the long run, so it wouldn't hurt to have more. It all depends on how frequently you wash. In my house its once a week, so I use cloth pads I have to wash them by hand. Its not too difficult though. Did that I help any or am I still being kinda vague?

No, it helped. I just had this mental image of someone waiting for the wash to be over so they could put their pad back in.

I only use a moon cup when I'm in the privacy of my own home (like on weekends and stuff) because it's hard to clean and reinsert in a public washroom, but in general, I find the cup is MUCH better than either pads or tampons because (except for swimming), I've never had any problems with leakage, and you don't even have to think about the fact that you are on your period except twice a day when you take it out and clean it. At first, it seemed kind of gross, but after a couple of uses and realizing how utterly convenient it was, it doesn't bother me at all. You also don't have to worry about dryness, since it's not soaking anything up.

    :roflmao:

I love FAQs  I've just been looking through the one on the original mooncup site, and managed to find this gem of a question:

    Hi
Can you advise if the Mooncup is safe to leave in during penetrative sex (not obviously as a method of contraception)?
    Thanks
    Mickie

    Dear Mickie,
No, the Mooncup is not for use during sexual intercourse. It would be in the way as it sits low in the vagina, not high like the contraceptive cap.

    Best Wishes
    Cathy

    I still haven't stopped laughing
