It all goes back to the Puritans. All of the pilgrims who came to the United States originally hundreds of years ago were part of a religious group called the Puritans. They had so many rules of what was "decent" and what was "sinful" that pretty much everything was tightly controlled. Even wearing buttons on your shirt or buckles on your shoes was considered ""sinfully ostentatious."

Their views on nudity were that no one should be naked, ever, because being naked invites the sin of lust from other people and you are insulting god every time you are naked. The only exception was for reproduction and even then they kept most of their clothes on.

Almost everything in the United States today was influenced by Puritans in some way or another, and a vastly large portion of United States culture is based on their beliefs whether people know it or not.

Why is gambling considered illegal outside of casinos? The Puritans thought gambling was sinful as a way to acquire wealth with no hard work.

Why are drugs considered bad and illegal? The Puritans believed putting any outside substance into your body other than food is sinful and desecrating what god made (this is also where the one drop rule that caused blacks to be seen as worse than whites came from, black blood was an outside substance).

Nudity was due to the sin of lust as mentioned previously (one of the reasons the Puritans didn't get along with Native Americans was because of how few clothes the natives wore in comparison to themselves).

So yeah, basically anything stupid you can think of about America, blame the Puritans and you'll probably be right.

Because we have to do everything differently than everyone else. Now matter how irrational or illogical it is.

The Puritan thing might be part of it, but I always interpreted it this way:

When you're naked, and especially when you're in the act of getting naked, you're revealing your entire self, blemishes and all. Whatever mask you had on before is gone, and that's a very intimate thing. People usually only do this to loved ones, at least, I thought, because they trust that person to be okay with whatever is shown. The act of sex is, ideally, very similar. You want to have sex with someone you can trust with doing things with your body, where you both can have fun and they won't hurt you in any way (unless, of course, we're talking S and M, but there still has trust that lies within that).
